Texas added some much-needed depth to the interior of its defensive line on Friday, swiping a transfer pledge from North Carolina at the last possible moment.
According to multiple reports, the Longhorns have signed Maryland transfer defensive lineman Lavon Johnson. On3’s Pete Nakos reported on Friday that Johnson signed a contract earlier the same day with North Carolina, but it seems he has reversed course just hours later and opted to join the SEC runners-up. CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz reported that Johnson has officially signed with Texas.
Johnson is a 6-foot-2, 311-pound lineman who appeared in 14 total games for the Terrapins across 2 seasons. He signed with the program as a 3-star recruit out of the 2023 class. At the time, he held power conference offers from Indiana, Michigan, Virginia Tech, and Baylor.
Snaps were limited across his 2 years with the Terps. He played 120 snaps on defense during the 2023 season, according to PFF. He saw 164 defensive snaps last fall. Johnson has 4 career quarterback pressures and 12 career stops, according to PFF. He has 19 career tackles, 1 sack, and 1.5 tackles for loss.
He briefly entered the transfer portal during the winter window but pulled his name back out of it 3 days later.
Johnson took a visit to Austin on Thursday — his only visit since entering the portal, according to Horns247.
He’ll provide some needed size and depth to a Texas defensive line that returns only 2 scholarship players from the 2024 roster. The Longhorns signed an elite high school class during the 2025 cycle, which featured 5-star lineman Justus Terry and 5-star edge Lance Jackson.
In total, Johnson becomes the seventh scholarship defensive lineman to join the team this offseason. He’s one of 4 transfer additions on the defensive line, joining Ohio State transfer Hero Kanu, North Carolina transfer Travis Shaw, and Purdue transfer Cole Brevard.
