High school sports weekly wrap-up: Spartans plan for inspirational honoring of 1975 championship team

Jim Jorgensen essentially bleeds Greeley West Spartans blue and gold.

As the veteran coach lives out his dream job guiding Greeley West’s baseball program, there is nothing more he would rather accomplish as the Spartans’ head coach than to get his alma mater back to past prominence.

What better way to promote such a task than to give his current crop of players, and the community that surrounds it, an up-close look at some of the absolute best athletes to ever don a Greeley West uniform?

Jorgensen and his staff will do exactly that before the Spartans’ showdown against their longtime crosstown rival, Greeley Central, at 7 p.m. May 8 at Butch Butler Field.

That game will serve as Greeley West’s regular season finale. But, Jorgensen hopes it will only be the start of something special for his young, impressionable squad as the program honors its first and only baseball state champion, the 1975 AAA championship squad.

“I just want some good vibes, and I hope we get a good turnout from people,” Jorgensen said. “I talked with Coach (John) Christensen about that, and he said, ‘You know, that state championship team didn’t just come from one night or from one season. … It just kept building and building.'”

Building is exactly what Jorgensen hopes to do with the Spartans program after becoming the team’s head coach in 2022.

There may not be a single person that wants to see Greeley West again be a force to be reckoned with on the diamond more than Jorgensen does.

Jorgensen’s Greeley West roots run deep.

He served a bit of a role on that ’75 championship team as a bat boy, while his famed father Juils Jorgensen was an assistant under Christensen .

So, naturally, as much as Jorgensen hopes to use next month’s pregame ceremony as a tool for inspiring his young team, he is just as motivated to honor many of the past athletes he once looked up to.

“They deserve it,” said Jorgensen, who graduated from Greeley West in 1978. “There were some definite stars on that team, and we’d like to get some recognition for them. … And it was just perfect timing as far as the math goes — 50 years.”

Though the state championship team will be honored in front of a crowd on May 8, at approximately 6:45 p.m., the festivities will actually begin the day before.

The day before the game, Jorgensen and company will take the alum on a tour through Greeley West’s new building before welcoming the alum to the team’s final practice of the season.

That night, the Spartans will host an informal dinner for the alum.

The Spartans are hoping players, managers and coaches from that team take part in the festivities.

Anyone who was a part of that championship team is encouraged to reach out on Messenger via Greeley West’s Facebook page.

    Minor setback

Walker Martin, a 2023 Eaton High School graduate and San Francisco Giants second-round draftee, is facing a bit of a setback early in his second season as a pro baseball player.

Earlier this week, Martin was placed on the seven-day injured list as a member of the San Jose Giants — the San Francisco Giants’ Single-A affiliate.

Before his injury, Martin — a 21-year-old left-hand-hitting shortstop — was batting .185 with four runs, one RBI, a double and a triple this spring.

In 2024, he hit .218 with 38 RBI, eight home runs, seven doubles and two triples in 243 at-bats in the Giants farm system.
