Looks like Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival attendees are in for more traffic delays.
Some lanes of the westbound 10 are expected to be closed through the early afternoon on Friday after a big rig overturned and caught fire near Washington Street, just west of the Empire Polo Club in Indio, where festivalgoers are flocking for the second weekend of the three-day music festival. According to Caltrans, westbound traffic is reduced to 1 lane from 1.4 mi west to 2.4 mi west of Indio at Varner Road in Riverside County.
Last Thursday, festivalgoers headed to weekend one of Coachella (the day before the annual music festival popped off in Indio), and traffic disasters were reported across social media. Frustrated festivalgoers said they’d been waiting up to 10 and 12 hours to get through the line and into the campsite. According to the social media users, they did not have access to water or restrooms while they were stuck in line, some car campers ran out of gas, others reported their cars overheated or were even sideswiped as people tried to cut in line or swerve around them.
George Cunningham, senior vice president of public safety with Goldenvoice, addressed the La Quinta City Council on Tuesday and said an influx of campers arriving early caused last weekend’s traffic issues. According to Cunningham, there were 6,300 campers already parked inside the campgrounds by 4:30 p.m., and in recent years, the festival didn’t see that many car campers until later in the evening. Cunningham outlined plans to ensure car campers at the festival were processed more quickly this time around, which included adding toll plazas where campers’ vehicles could be searched before entry.

The Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival gates open at 1 p.m., for those who missed some of the sets, or won’t make it to the festival, there is still a chance to catch some of this year’s most prominent acts. Coachella will once again live stream a select number of performances on its YouTube channel and has partnered with the platform to offer the Coachella Livestream app. Both the app and the channel will include performances from the Coachella Mainstage, Outdoor Theatre, Sahara tent, Mojave tent, Gobi tent and Yuma tent.
The Sonora tent won’t be featured during weekend two’s stream as it did during weekend one, and the Do Lab will not be streaming any of its EDM performers, remaining an in-person festival exclusive.
Fans who download the Coachella Livestream app on Google Play or the Apple App Store will be able to create their own viewing schedules by selecting individual performances to their profile. Streaming for all stages for weekend two will begin at 4 p.m. on Friday, April 18, and continue through Sunday, April 20.
The stream will be repeated after the headlining set until the new stream returns the next day and plays continuously throughout weekend two. Find the set times and streaming channels here.
