Dolly Parton has fans all over the world, but the ones in Tennessee (Parton's home state) have a distinct sense of pride about the country music superstar and renowned philanthropist.
With that in mind, they have started a Change.org petition to rename the Nashville International Airport after their beloved icon — because then everyone in Nashville could be "departin' with Parton!"
The petition reads, "As proud citizens of Tennessee, we are motivated by our deep-rooted admiration for the national treasure and Tennessee legend, Dolly Parton. She is not only a celebrated artist who encourages love, acceptance, and goodwill through her music but also a philanthropist, known for her countless contributions to society. It is only fitting that an institution as significant as Nashville International Airport carries the name of such a remarkable woman."
Parton was born in 1946 in Pittman Center, Tennessee, which is a small town on the eastern side of the state that borders the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. She grew up in nearby Sevierville, graduating from Sevier County High School in 1964. According to a profile in the Washington Times, she left for Nashville the day after graduation, and the Music City has been her home ever since.
The petition continues, "Dolly has made substantial impacts on thousands of lives, especially through her Imagination Library program, which has gifted over 100 million books to children since it began in 1995. Dolly's philanthropic efforts, her outstanding influence in the music industry, and the love she has instilled in our hearts through her actions and songs, truly make her a deserving candidate to have the Nashville International Airport named after her.
"We request that the airport’s name be changed to Dolly Parton International Airport to honor an icon who has given so much to our state and to the world. Sign the petition to make this change a reality. We could all be Departin' from Parton!"
The petition has over 50,000 signatures as of this writing.
Indeed, Parton's Imagination Library, which is part of her Dollywood Foundatoin, is "dedicated to inspiring a love of reading by gifting books free of charge to children from birth to age five," according to the website. It was inspired by Parton's father's inability to read or write. When it began in 1995, it was for children in the United States, but it has since expanded to five countries, gifting "millions of free books each month to children around the world."
