NEW blackout license plates are coming to over 100 DMVs after they exploded in popularity.

The plates, first launched last year in Minnesota, feature a simple design with white letters on a black background.

Since their launch on January 1, 2024, more than a quarter of a million vehicles in the North Star state now use them.

A total of 256,387 were sold in the first year of availability, far outselling the DMV’s expectations.

And now motorists in Kansas have been given the green light to use them, as reported by KSNT.

Kansas Governor Laura Kelly signed House Bill 2201 on April 9.

It permits the state to acquire three new types of distinctive license plates.

They include the National Future Farmers of America (FFA), Route 66 Association of Kansas, and blackout-style license plates.

The Kansas Department of Revenue (KDOR) will begin issuing the new license plates on January 1, 2026.

Kansans can obtain the new plates through the KDOR’s website.

But drivers will have to pay an extra fee to be handed the new plates.

Blackout-style plates will see road users fork out $50, with money collected by the state to be used for replacing older license plates.

Meanwhile, National FFA Organization plates will see drivers pay between $25 and $100 with funds going to the Kansas FFA Foundation.

And Route 66 Association of Kansas designs also have a fee anywhere between $25 and $100.

Again, cash will be poured into the Route 66 Association of Kansas.

This comes as blackout plates are now used in Colorado, Iowa, and Minnesota.

Officials at Minnesota’s Driver and Vehicle Services Division said they predicted they would sell 160,000 of the plates in 2024.

“A lot of people really like for their car to have that look,” Greg Loper, vehicle services program director for DVS, told MPR News at that time.

“There’s a lot of black cars out there, there’s a lot of white cars out there right now.

“And so I think that the blackout plate looks cool on cars and it goes with the color scheme of a lot of cars.”

Along with the blackout plates, eight other specialized license plates went on sale in Minnesota last year.

Of those, six were to promote Minnesota pro sports teams.

The NFL’s Minnesota Vikings were the most popular team plate, with 5,787 sold in 2024.

Minnesota Wild from the NHL and the MLB’s Minnesota Twins were the second and third-most popular specialized plates, with 2,305 and 2,015 sold respectively.

The fourth-most popular plate was for the NBA’s Minnesota Timberwolves, with 1,422 sold.

Soccer franchise Minnesota United FC in the MLS, and the WNBA’s Minnesota Lynx, sold 666 and 165 specialized plates respectively.

Meanwhile, in Iowa, more than 758,000 blackout plates have been issued since their debut six years ago.

How to prepare for the DMV

Here are some ways to streamline your DMV experience:

Check the DMV website for your state to see if the task can be done completely online. Many processes can now be done online, like renewing a vehicle’s registration or changing an address. Otherwise, several processes can be started online and finished at an in-person location, like renewing a driver’s license. Schedule an appointment. While walk-ins are available at all locations, having an appointment time can help reduce frustrating wait times. Check the DMV’s website to ensure you have all the necessary forms for the task. Get there early. Since many people prefer to try and tackle simple tasks on their lunch breaks or days off, showing up early can mean you’re only one of a few. Eat before you go or bring a snack. Since wait times can exceed expectations, bring some form of sustenance. Be positive. The process is temporary.
