Beloved grocery chain ‘way less expensive than Walmart’ to open five new locations in 2025

A POPULAR grocery chain is expanding this year, with several new locations set to open soon.

While it’s known for its food and drink selections and a made-to-order area, many consumers praise its low prices.

Some have even claimed the retailer in question, Wegmans, beats out giants like Walmart with more budget-friendly offerings on certain items.

“I’ve realized paper products have skyrocketed so much it’s ridiculous!!!” exclaimed shopper Lindsey Czworka in a post on Facebook.

“WAY too expensive at walmart!! I get them at Wegmans now!! Saved me $10 to $25!! WAY cheaper at wegmans!!”

Wegmans was founded back in 1916 by brothers Walter and John Wegman.

The pair opened a 20,000 square-foot store that year — something unheard of at the time and considered massive.

    MASSIVE GROWTH

Over a century later, Wegmans has expanded to around 112 stores across eight states and Washington DC.

Those states include Delaware, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Virginia.

Only a couple of years ago, in 2019, Wegmans celebrated the opening of its 100th store and has further expansion plans throughout 2025, per Grocery Dive.

The most recent opening was in Lake Grove, New York, in February, and there are plans to bring in at least five others.

Included on the list are a single location in Connecticut, another in Maryland, and two additional Wegmans stores in North Carolina, per the Future Locations section on its website.

    LONG TIME COMING

In January, Wegmans also confirmed it would bring another Pennsylvania store to customers this year, the first near Pittsburgh.

Dan Aken, vice president of real estate and store planning at Wegmans, said the retailer has considered the move for a long time.

“We’ve received thousands of requests for a Wegmans in the Pittsburgh region since opening our first Pennsylvania store over 30 years ago,” Aken explained in a news release.

“We’re excited to have finally found the right location to bring Wegmans to the Pittsburgh area.”

    Future Wegmans Stores

Wegmans is opening at least five new stores for customers in the coming months. Each is listed below:

Norwalk, Connecticut Rockville, Maryland Charlotte, North Carolina Holly Springs, North Carolina Cranberry Township, Pennsylvania

The store will sit at about 115,000 square feet and occupy at least 13 acres.

Wegmans also noted that a “timeline for construction and opening has not yet been determined” for the Pittsburgh location.

No official opening dates are listed for the other four stores.

The U.S. Sun has contacted Wegmans for more information.

Each of the new stores will create about 400 to 500 jobs for local residents.

Wegmans also intends to give back to the communities through food donations and community event sponsorships.

Other retailers are also opening new locations this year.

Walmart, for example, plans to open at least 10 additional stores as part of a five-year plan to convert or build more than 150.

A convenience store giant is also ramping up plans to add around 1,300 more locations by 2030.
