Big Lots is opening a new wave of stores after months of uncertainty around the company’s future.

Recently, the chain announced that it would close 700 store locations after filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

The Ohio-based retailer was announced its sale to Gordon Brothers Retail Partners in January.

Variety Wholesalers acquired 219 Big Lots locations and two distribution centers as part of the deal.

Variety Wholesalers’ purchase of Big Lots stores is a major growth move.

The company plans to strengthen its standing as a top player in the discount retail space.

Its portfolio includes Roses, Roses Express, and Maxway.

The new Big Lots locations are Variety’s first venture since the acquisition.

“We’re thrilled to bring the Big Lots! brand back to life by offering more deals than ever, lots of famous brands and a new apparel department for the entire family,” Variety Wholesalers CEO Lisa Seigies said in a press release.

“We’re opening stores quickly so we can serve the community. We know the stores won’t be perfect to start, but each week we’ll add more new products as we build towards the grand opening celebration in the fall.

“Every time a customer visits Big Lots! we want them to find something new and exciting!”

The first wave of openings began on April 10 with nine new stores across six states.

A total of 55 Big Lots stores are scheduled to reopen on May 1.

Two more waves of reopenings are expected through early June, according to a recent announcement.

Variety Wholesalers said shoppers can look forward to remodeled stores and expanded closeout deals.

Big Lots will even carry new product categories like family apparel and electronics.

The upcoming reopenings will include locations in North Carolina, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and West Virginia, along with stores in additional states.

Other retailers have also announced plans to acquire Big Lots stores.

In March, Ocean State Job Lot said it would purchase 15 locations across New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania, New York, Massachusetts, Maine, and Vermont.

Big Lots competitor Ollie’s Bargain Outlet revealed it would be acquiring 40 former Big Lots locations in February.
