The Greeley City Council unanimously approved raises for three key government positions on Tuesday: the city attorney, the city manager and the municipal judge.
Combined, the raises equate to nearly $50,000 annually, paid from the city’s general fund.
The city performed its annual performance reviews through outside consultants in March. It reviewed City Attorney Stacey Aurzada, City Manager Raymond Lee III and Municipal Judge Mark Gonzales, who all directly report to the city council as part of their duties.
The reviews found that each of their performances over the course of 2024 met the city’s expectations and earned them merit raises. Each of these raises will be implemented retroactively, starting Feb. 13, 2025.
As the city manager, Lee oversees the day-to-day operations and implements programs and policies established by the city council. In March, BizWest named Lee the Most Influential Business Leader in Government and Education, one of only 10 people selected.
“There’s a rare amount of people that are able to be in this space because it is uncomfortable, and nobody likes discomfort. But you do really well in it because you see the opportunity for growth, not only for you but for our community and our staff,” Councilwoman Melissa McDonald said, praising Lee after the council voted.
The city council gave Lee a 5.5% raise for his services, equating to $16,603.11 and raising his annual salary to $318,474.69. Lee is the highest-paid employee working for the city of Greeley.
Additionally, the city is raising its contribution to Lee’s 401(k) by 1%, bringing its contribution up to 12% of his annual salary. The city also provides Lee with a car allowance of $7,200 per year that will not be adjusted as part of this raise.
Aurzada has been a key figure in the legal decisions regarding the city council’s latest ventures, including the Cascadia project, which looks to construct an entertainment district and the new home of the Colorado Eagles west of Greeley. This is in addition to the recent lawsuit Greeley filed against Windsor.
Her work has earned her a 6.8% raise, equating to $16,747.01 and raising her annual salary to $263,026.62.
Gonzales received a 6.8% raise for his work as the city’s municipal judge. Municipal judges are responsible for presiding over civil and criminal cases related to the city charter and city code. With this raise, he would also be responsible for court safety and the oversight of court marshalls.
The city council’s raise for Gonzales’ services is $13,700.01, bringing his annual salary to $215,173.47. In addition to this increased salary, the city will also contribute $10,758. 67 to his 457 retirement plan.
“This is city council’s validation that our three direct reports are doing stellar work for the city, and we have recognized your excellent work and we appreciate you all very much,” Mayor John Gates said.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the median household income in Greeley is $68,650.
