Natalie Portman Makes a Bold Confession About Her Past

Oscar winner Natalie Portman became a fixture in film beginning at the young age of 12 when she starred in the 1994 movie Léon:The Professional. With a career spanning over 30 years headlining blockbusters that include the Star Wars and Thor franchises, Portman earned critical acclaim for her acting range in dramatic roles like Nina in Black Swan, landing an Academy Award.

The May December actress recently sat down with Wednesday's Jenny Ortega and revealed how she had to navigate the pressures of Hollywood as a young actress.

"I think there’s a public understanding of me that’s different from who I am," Portman explained. "I’ve talked about it a little before — about how, as a kid, I was really sexualized, which I think happens to a lot of young girls who are onscreen. I felt very scared by it. Obviously sexuality is a huge part of being a kid, but I wanted it to be inside of me, not directed towards me."

In her conversation with Ortega, with whom she stars in the upcoming film The Gallerist, Portman revealed she adopted a more intellectual persona as self-protection.

"I felt like my way of protecting myself was to be like, 'I’m so serious. I’m so studious. I’m smart, and that’s not the kind of girl you attack,'" the Harvard grad commented. "I was like, if I create this image of myself, I’ll be left alone. It shouldn’t be a thing, but it worked."

Portman also noted the improvements she's seen more recently in Hollywood, and tends to keep her two children — Aleph and Amalia — out of the spotlight.

The Gallerist is schedule for release in 2026.
