ORANGE – Orange Lutheran started the Trinity League part of its baseball schedule in the worst possible way.
The Lancers, who were the league champion last season, went 0-3 in their league-opening series against St. John Bosco two weeks ago.
Last week they swept JSerra in a three-game league series.
On Wednesday they clinched another series win with a 4-0 victory over Santa Margarita at Hart Park, Orange Lutheran’s home field.
Wednesday’s win on a chilly evening followed a 3-0 win over Santa Margarita on Tuesday. The series concludes Thursday with a 2:30 p.m. game at Hart Park.
Three Orange Lutheran pitchers teamed up Wednesday to shut out Santa Margarita on one hit. Sophomore right-hander Gary Morse, who committed to Tennessee, pitched the first 4.2 innings and gave up one hit, a single by Brody Schumaker that led off the fourth inning. Senior lefty Caden Miller pitched an inning and junior right-hander Tristan Ramos got the final four outs.
Sophomore left fielder Ricardo Hurtado had two of the Lancers’ four hits, including a two-run single in their four-run fourth inning. Junior shortstop Marcus Greis had an RBI single in the fourth and scored on a wild pitch.
The Lancers have won five in a row, with the last three by shutout.
Orange Lutheran first-year head coach RJ Farrell, who was an assistant coach under his predecessor Eric Borba, said the Lancers did not play to their potential against St. John Bosco in that opening series.
“All credit to Bosco for what they did,” Farrell said. “We made mistakes and they capitalized on them. Last week was a really good week, the way we came back together and now we’ve strung some wins together.”

“During the Bosco series we weren’t together as a team,” Hurtado said. “So we did some thinking. We came out as one unit against JSerra and that’s transferred over to this Santa Margarita series.”
Santa Margarita is struggling, especially offensively. The Eagles have lost four in a row and have been outscored 18-4 over those four losses. They were held to three hits in the final game of their series against St. John Bosco on Friday, had only two hits in the 3-0 loss to Santa Margarita on Tuesday and just the one hit Wednesday.
The Eagles had a couple of chances to score.
They had runners on first and third with no outs in the top of the fourth inning. Morse got a strikeout, an infield pop out and a ground out to end that threat. Santa Margarita loaded the bases with two outs in the sixth, but Ramos got a ground out to conclude that inning.
The Trinity League standings through Wednesday: St. John Bosco is in first place with a 7-1 league record; Orange Lutheran is second at 5-3; and JSerra, Mater Dei, Santa Margarita and Servite all are at 3-5 in league.
Orange Lutheran, No. 3 in the Orange County Top 25, is 16-4 overall. No. 2 Santa Margarita is 11-9 overall.
