Nitish Rana reacts strongly after Rajasthan Royalss Super Over Snub

Cricket experts and fans were left surprised by the Rajasthan Royals’ (RR) decision not to send Nitish Rana during the Super Over in the thrilling IPL 2025 match against Delhi Capitals (DC) at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi on Wednesday, April 16.

Despite Nitish Rana’s brilliant 51 off 28 balls and Yashasvi Jaiswal’s steady 51 off 37 balls during the original chase of 189 runs against the Delhi Capitals, neither of the two was sent out to bat in the Super Over. Instead, Shimron Hetmyer and Riyan Parag walked out to face Mitchell Starc.

This call has raised many eyebrows, especially as Jaiswal was lined up to bat only if a wicket fell, and Rana wasn’t even among the three options chosen by the Royals for the Super Over. Speaking after the match, Rana said that it was the team management’s decision not to pick him.

However, Rana also stressed that if Shimron Hetmyer had managed a couple of sixes, the questions would have been different, but his response would have been the same. In the Super Over, DC pacer Mitchell Starc started with a dot ball to Hetmyer by delivering a perfect yorker.

However, Hetmyer then hit a four on the second ball but could only manage a single on the third. On the other hand, Riyan Parag struck a boundary over the third man on a no-ball. However, when it seemed like RR was heading for a solid total, things quickly changed.

The management takes the call, not one person: Nitish Rana

On the very next delivery, both Parag and Jaiswal were run out, leaving RR with just 11 runs in total. That wasn’t enough, as KL Rahul and Tristan Stubbs smashed two sixes in the first three balls off Sandeep Sharma’s Super Over to secure a thrilling victory for DC against the Royals.

Nitish Rana said at the post-match press conference, “The management takes the call, not one person. The captain is there along with two other senior players and coaches. If Shimron Hetmyer had hit two sixes, then you wouldn't be asking this question.

I will give the same answer. I don't have any other answer. Whatever decisions we took were absolutely right. Hetmyer is our finisher; everyone knows that. He has delivered in the past.”

Rana also defended the RR team management's decision to send Sandeep Sharma instead of Jofra Archer to defend 11 in the Super Over against the DC in Delhi. He further explained, “One person never takes such calls. Management and support staff are there to discuss such things.”

The RR continued, “If the decision was in our favor, then your question would have been different. Cricket is a result-oriented sport. If Sandeep Sharma had bowled well in the Super Over, which he has done in the past. In this situation, he was most likely the bowler for us. We were one big shot short. We were targeting 15 runs in the Super Over.”

During the original chase, the Rajasthan Royals needed 9 runs in the final over to win. Mitchell Starc bowled cleverly, allowing only singles and twos. It came down to the last ball, with Dhruv Jurel trying to take a second run to win the game.

But Jurel was run out, and the match went into a Super Over to decide the winner. Rana signed off by saying, “I think we must give credit to Starc. After a long time, I saw someone bowl like this in the death overs, especially in the IPL.”
