OAKLAND — Police here have identified a teen shot and killed earlier this month in an incident that left his 42-year-old father injured.
Zion Greenwood, 19, was shot and killed a little after midnight on April 4, in an apartment on the 1400 block of Filbert Street. His father was hospitalized with serious injuries but survived, police said.
No arrests have been announced, and police haven’t revealed whether they’ve identified a suspected motive or if Greenwood was the intended target. One witness told police that an unknown intruder kicked in the door and began shooting, but evidence at the scene didn’t corroborate this, authorities said.
Greenwood was described in an online fundraiser for his family as a “bright light in our lives — hardworking, deeply inquisitive, and full of love.” A memorial posting identifies him as a San Rafael resident.
“He was the kind of person who asked big questions about the world, cared deeply for those around him, and always made time for his family,” the posting says.
Bridge the Gap, a nonprofit tutoring service based in Marin County, posted to Facebook about Greenwood’s passing, describing him as “one of our beloved students” who was “full of potential.” includes a picture of Greenwood in a graduation cap and gown with a scarf that reads, “Class of 2024.”
“His loss is deeply felt across the community,” the post says.
