(NEXSTAR) – Time is running out for some Walgreens shoppers to file for their part of a proposed class action settlement that accuses the pharmacy chain of overcharging for generic drugs.
The April 17 filing deadline applies to all class members of the $100 million settlement, except those who requested information about their drug purchases on or before April 12, 2024, according to the settlement site. Those Walgreens shoppers will have until June 16, 2025, to file a claim, the court ruled earlier this month.
What prompted the settlement?
The class action lawsuit alleges that Walgreens sold generic drugs at a higher cost to customers with insurance than to members of its Prescription Savings Club, according to court documents.
Walgreens has denied any wrongdoing in the case, telling Nexstar's KNWA/KFTA in a statement:
We admit no liability and believe these claims never had any merit. We launched the Prescription Savings Club (PSC) more than 15 years ago to provide equitable access to lower-cost medications for the uninsured and underinsured. This resolution allows us to focus on our turnaround strategy that will benefit our patients, customers, team members and shareholders.
The Savings Club allowed shoppers to pay an annual fee for access to discounts on thousands of medications.
According to Walgreens, the Prescription Savings Club ended Aug. 31, 2024.
How to file a claim
To file a claim, start by visiting the official website of the administrator, savingsclubsettlement.com.
There is a link to the claim form, which, for most class members, must be either submitted online, or postmarked and mailed by April 17, 2025.
To be eligible to join the settlement class, you must have used prescription insurance benefits to buy one or more prescriptions drugs within the U.S. and its territories between Jan. 1, 2007, and Nov. 18, 2024.
Where does your neighborhood rank among the 2025 ‘Best Places to Live’?Walgreens employees and their immediate families are among those excluded from the settlement. See the form instructions for more details.
The amount that individual members might receive of the $100,000,000 is not clear and will depend on the size of the settlement class and court approval of the "allocation and distribution" plan.
A court hearing in Chicago to seek approval of the details of the plan is scheduled for Sept. 10, 2025, according to an announcement by the attorneys representing the settlement class.
