Urban Meyer isn’t a college football head coach anymore. He’s an analyst now, so he doesn’t have to give politically-correct answers about controversies like the Nico Iamaleava saga that just rocked Rocky Top.
And Meyer wasn’t holding back on criticizing Tennessee during his appearance on the weekly podcast The Triple Option with former Alabama star Mark Ingram and Rob Stone. Some have actually applauded the way Josh Heupel’s program stood up to Iamaleava and took a stand in the wake of all the noise leading up to Iamaleava’s official departure on Wednesday morning.
Not Meyer. No way. And he wanted everyone to know exactly how he felt on the touchy matter.
“Here’s the reality. Tennessee is screwed,” Meyer said. “I mean, they got a problem. You lose a potential high draft pick. The backup quarterback left last year and now you have a redshirt freshman that threw 9 passes as a freshman. You have zero experience. The portal opens as we speak … they are going to have to go get [a quarterback].
“There’s a couple of key elements here. Everyone is saying ‘nice job Tennessee, taking a stand.’ I got a little comment on that. Tennessee plays Florida usually every year in October. Can you imagine that game is going the other way and Coach Heupel grabs the microphone and stands on the 50-yard line at Neyland Stadium and says ‘it’s OK, I made a stand way back when.'”
What exactly Tennessee does in the aftermath of Iamaleava’s departure remains to be seen and will be great theatre for the college football world as spring football winds down.
Heupel has already confirmed plans to add another quarterback during the spring transfer window, but it remains to be seen what caliber of player the Vols will be able to bring to Knoxville for the 2025 season.
