Today, Wednesday, April 16, the Syrian Minister of Interior, Anas Khattab, outlined his ministry’s future ideas and plans.
Khattab stated that the ministry would establish representation in every governorate through a single official instead of having a security directorate and a police leadership. All branches and offices in the governorate will report to the ministry’s representative, who will be responsible for both police and security matters.
A committee has also been tasked with preparing a scientific and practical study to advance and develop criminal investigations to meet needs by equipping forensic labs with the latest devices and technologies, and the committee began its work days ago.
The ministry held a session with officials from the Drug Enforcement Administration to discuss enhancing their operations and providing them with the necessary equipment and human resources, following appropriate training courses to graduate the required personnel, “especially with what we inherited from a country turned into a Captagon factory at the hands of that criminal gang,” the minister added.
The ministry will enhance the civil status database and prepare specific data to process the information and requests received by the ministry. Soon, electronic service applications will be launched in coordination with the Ministry of Communications and Technology to deliver services to citizens as quickly and cost-effectively as possible.
In the traffic sector, an agreement was made to transition to a modern traffic operation model using smart cameras and speed monitoring devices to track violations and traffic accidents. Solutions to the traffic congestion in Damascus are currently being examined through specialized committees.
Regarding immigration and passports, the Ministry of Interior emphasized the continuity of this administration’s work without interruption after the fall of the ousted regime. The administration has been prepared despite the damage and fires that affected its headquarters. More than 160,000 passports have been issued, and thousands of transactions have been processed, with ongoing efforts to develop the administration.
The Syrian Minister of Interior also addressed the fight against remnants of the regime, stating, “We have finished a coup project that was prepared by a group of officers from the fallen regime, and it is now a thing of the past due to our forces and our people.”
Work has also begun to update information in coordination with relevant authorities and to review what has been accomplished in collaboration with the Ministry of Defense, in addition to agreeing on enhancing the administration tasked with pursuing lawbreakers by strengthening coordination with other security entities in the ministry to reinforce security and stability.
Efforts are still ongoing to develop the structure of the Ministry of Interior to meet the needs and required tasks, ultimately aiming for an organizational structure that covers needs and helps establish correct relationships between all agencies under the Ministry of Interior.
In the prison sector
Minister Anas Khattab stated that this file is associated with painful memories for Syrians, and sessions have been held with specialists in the administration to identify impediments to their work and to seek solutions.
Work will be undertaken to ensure that prisons become a starting point for rehabilitation, allowing inmates to become individuals that integrate with society and become productive members.
An agreement has been reached with the Construction Administration to temporarily rehabilitate existing prisons until new detention centers can be established to achieve justice and respect the rights of detainees.
Within 20 days, the complaints department in the center of Damascus will be activated to facilitate access for reviewers and receive their complaints in accordance with legal procedures. A similar branch will later be opened in the city of Aleppo, alleviating the burden on citizens, with additional branches planned to gradually cover other governorates.
Specialized missions have been sent to several countries to learn about advancements in police and security sciences, and several delegations have been received to discuss developing security and policing work and the necessary training courses.
The minister expressed hope for more cooperation and coordination with all countries, especially neighboring ones, to face existing challenges, primarily fighting the Islamic State and securing borders, as well as curbing the spread of drugs and organized crime.
“We promise our people that in the Ministry of Interior, we work quietly so that you can live securely, God willing. We will remain the vigilant eye to ensure your safety and security, establishing a stable reality where all Syrians enjoy dignity and freedom, after being robbed of them for more than fifty years,” added Khattab.
The transitional Syrian president appointed the new Syrian government on March 30. As part of this appointment, Anas Khattab was named Minister of Interior after previously serving as the head of the General Intelligence Directorate in Syria.
