Syrian government reinstates over 14,000 employees dismissed by Assad regime

The Ministry of Administrative Development in Syria announced on Tuesday, April 15, that over 14,000 employees have been reinstated to their positions in the Ministry of Education after being dismissed arbitrarily by the previous regime due to their participation in the Syrian revolution.

The ministry stated that, based on the government’s commitment to rectify the injustices faced by those arbitrarily dismissed because of their involvement in the Syrian revolution, the Ministry of Administrative Development announces the initial lists of names for which the review of their files has been completed in the Ministry of Education, which includes 14,646 cases.

The ministry requested that the employees listed in the file attached to its statement visit the relevant education directorates to follow up on the necessary administrative procedures for their return to work.

The Ministry of Administrative Development also confirmed that it will continue to coordinate with other ministries sequentially to process all files of employees who were arbitrarily dismissed due to their participation in the Syrian revolution.

On Monday, April 14, the Ministry of Administrative Development announced that it had begun implementing procedures to reinstate workers dismissed by the previous regime because of their involvement in the Syrian revolution.

The Minister of Administrative Development, Mohammad al-Sakaf, stated that in line with the government’s commitment to address the effects of the previous phase and to ensure justice for those affected, the review of the files of applicants from the Ministry of Education has been completed, with a total of 22,644 applications received.

Al-Sakaf added that coordination is currently underway with other ministries to address similar cases, ensuring that rights are restored to their rightful owners according to a clear timetable.

Al-Sakaf emphasized, “The ministry is keen on achieving administrative justice and closing the chapter of wrongful dismissal, which enhances trust in the new state institutions.”

The Ministry of Administrative Development had called on employees who were dismissed from their positions in ministries and public entities due to their political stances and participation in the revolution to register through a dedicated link for reinstating dismissed employees, setting a deadline of February 24 for receiving applications.

The link included a form containing numerous questions and required information, including personal data, the name of the ministry where the dismissed employee worked, the start and dismissal dates, years of experience, and languages spoken, as well as whether they wished to return to the same job.

On March 4, the Minister of Administrative Development in the interim Damascus government, Mohammad al-Sakaf, stated that the ministry is reviewing the cases of dismissals of employees by the previous regime, starting with the Ministry of Education as a first phase, with plans to review dismissal cases progressively for all employees in various ministries.

Al-Sakaf indicated that studying the dismissal cases of Ministry of Education employees aims to reinstate them and ensure their employment rights, with further updates on this matter to be announced soon through the ministry’s official channels.

The previous Syrian regime employed a policy of dismissing employees based on their participation in protests or support for the Syrian revolution, relying on security reports issued by intelligence branches.

This policy continued until the last months before its downfall, as the previous regime’s government issued a decision in September 2024 to dismiss 41 employees from the As-Suwayda Electricity Company due to their failure to comply with the military reserved service and their participation in protests.
