Former Florida State star Charlie Ward is reportedly landing a head coaching job for a basketball program in Florida. The 1993 Heisman Trophy winner, Ward was a 2-sport star for the Seminoles before embarking on an NBA career.
According to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, Florida A&M is finalizing a deal as of Wednesday to hire Ward as the program’s new head basketball coach. Ward was a unanimous All-American in 1993 for FSU football and led the program to its first-ever national title in that same season.

— Pete Thamel (@PeteThamel) April 16, 2025As a college football player, Ward threw for over 5,700 yards and 49 touchdowns while rushing for nearly 900 yards with 10 touchdowns. However, his best professional accomplishments came in the NBA after starring for FSU basketball.
A 4-year contributor for the Seminoles on the hardwood, Ward played just 16 games his senior season after joining the team following the football program’s run to a national title. He averaged 10.5 points, 4.9 assists, 3.9 rebounds and 2.8 steals in his senior season before being selected as a first-round pick of the New York Knicks in the 1994 NBA Draft.
Ward would play in the NBA for a decade, and he is still FSU’s all-time leader in steals at 238. He’s also 7th in all-time assists with 396.
Since the summer of 2007, Ward has worked in various roles as a basketball coach, including landing the head coaching job for Florida State University Schools (Florida High) in Tallahassee in the spring of 2018. Now, it looks like Ward will be headed to the ranks of a college head coach via FAMU.
