Nitish Rana has finally broken his silence on being overlooked for Riyan Parag for Rajasthan Royals’ captaincy when Sanju Samson was recovering from surgery at the start of IPL 2025.
Riyan Parag was named the RR captain for the first three games while Sanju Samson played as an impact sub, as he was not in perfect condition to resume his wicket-keeping duties.
Samson was waiting to get clearance from the NCA to play as a wicketkeeper-batter at the start of the season, which forced the Rajasthan Royals to give the leadership baton to Riyan while Dhruv Jurel took care of the wicketkeeping duties during the first three matches.
Under Parag’s captaincy, the Royals crushed Chennai Super Kings by 6 runs in Guwahati. However, Riyan lost the two games as the RR skipper.
Well, when the Assam star was chosen as the captain, many were not pleased, as they also had Rana, who had also led the Kolkata Knight Riders in the past, and his name was also suggested by a few.

Well, Nitish Rana has finally shared his thoughts on the Rajasthan Royals’ decision to appoint Riyan as their captain.
Speaking about the move, Nitish made it clear that he had no problem with the franchise choosing Parag for the leadership role in Samson’s absence.
Nitish explained that he was with the Kolkata Knight Riders for around six to seven years before he was made the captain.
Rana said that he got captaincy because he was familiar with the team’s environment and culture over time. He noted that the same logic applies to Parag, who has been a part of the Royals squad since 2019 and knows the team inside out.
Riyan Parag knows the RR setup better than me: Nitish Rana
Nitish Rana insisted that it was a sensible and fair decision by RR to trust a player who has been part of their setup for several seasons.
However, Rana admitted that he would’ve gladly taken up the captaincy if it was offered to him, but he fully supports the RR’s decision to back Parag for the job.
Nitish Rana said at the pre-match press conference ahead of the RR vs DC match, “When I was made captain of KKR, I had been with the team for 6-7 years. That helped a lot because I understood the team culture and environment. Now, with RR, I think Riyan knows the team's setup better than I. And I think it was absolutely the right decision by the management.”
The Delhi lad signed off by saying, “If they had asked me, of course, I would've happily accepted the captaincy. But what matters most is what's right for the team. And I think they made the correct call.”
