Newcastle United are coming on strong at the business end of the campaign.

A 4-1 victory over Manchester United on Sunday moved Eddie Howe’s team up to fourth place in the Premier League table. They are now just a point behind Nottingham Forest in third having played one game fewer.

Newcastle might even have second spot in their sights. A win on Wednesday would see the gap between them and Arsenal shrink to four points. With the Gunners now focused on the Champions League, the prospect of Newcastle overtaking them is not unthinkable.

Not that Howe will be taking anything for granted. The manager missed Sunday’s meeting with Manchester United due to illness and he is unlikely to be back in time for the visit of Crystal Palace. 

But both he and his assistant Jason Tindall will be working hard to ensure no one at St James’ Park is getting ahead of themselves. Champions League qualification, for which a top-five finish is required, is the sole objective from here.

Newcastle were excellent at the weekend. They were the better team in the first half, but Manchester United carried a threat on the break and went in at half-time with the score 1-1.

In the second period, though, Newcastle showed their class. They scored three goals and could have had more. United barely had a sniff from the restart until the final whistle. Newcastle were superior in every area of the pitch.

“We went out and delivered a performance he (Howe) would be proud of,” Tindall said afterwards. “Amongst our pressing was some fantastic football and some good goals.”

Newcastle won the EFL Cup last month, ending a 55-year domestic trophy drought. Crucially, they did not take their eye off the ball or put their feet up after that big day out at Wembley.

Newcastle are the form team in the Premier League over the last six games, having accumulated 15 points from the last 18 on offer. In the last 12 sets of fixtures, only Liverpool have collected more points. 

In the race for the top four, Newcastle have momentum behind them. With only a few weeks of the season remaining, that could be a pivotal factor.

Crystal Palace have also been in good form of late, but they were humbled in a 5-2 defeat by Manchester City on Saturday.

Palace stormed into a 2-0 lead at the Eithad Stadium, but they were powerless to resist as the champions fought back to claim maximum points.

The Eagles are unlikely to qualify for Europe via the Premier League, so their season in effect comes down to the FA Cup.

We could see their league form dip between now and their semi-final clash with Aston Villa at the end of the month.

Palace have scored in each of their last nine matches on their travels, as well as in all but one of their last 16 clashes on unfamiliar soil.

Newcastle, for their part, have only kept one clean sheet in their last seven home games in all competitions.

Jacob Murphy to score any time

Jacob Murphy is Newcastle’s unsung hero. 

The forward is not in the same class as Alexander Isak or Anthony Gordon, but he continues to contribute to the cause.

It is not just hard work either. Murphy does indeed put a shift in for the team, but he is in the XI because of his numbers first and foremost.

He has had five direct goal involvements in his last four appearances for the Magpies, including an assist against Manchester United.

Murphy will now be aiming to get on the scoresheet against Crystal Palace.
