Anthony Bourdain’s Favorite Sandwich Is Meaty, Cheesy and Pretty Much Perfect

Anthony Bourdain, the acclaimed chef, author, and television personality, was renowned for his adventurous spirit and profound appreciation for global culinary traditions. Throughout his illustrious career, Bourdain captivated audiences with his unfiltered storytelling, insatiable curiosity and deep respect for the diverse cultures he encountered.

One of the many highlights of his journey was his ability to transform simple ingredients into extraordinary dishes, reflecting his philosophy that great food doesn't always require complexity. When I ran across a TikTok from @heresyourbite that featured Bourdain's favorite sandwich—a 5-ingredient mortadella stunner—I knew I had to give it a try. Here’s how it went.

Anthony Bourdain’s Favorite Mortadella Sandwich ? Here’s how to make it:
4 oz mortadella (split into two bundles)
2 slices provolone cheese
Mayo, to taste
Dijon or whole grain mustard, to taste
Bread of choice
1. Heat a nonstick pan over medium heat. Bundle your mortadella in two piles and place them directly in the pan. Cook for about 2-3 minutes, or until crispy (not burnt).
2. Flip your mortadella and add your provolone cheese directly on top. Cover with a lid until the cheese is melted. Remove from pan and set aside.
3. Mayo the outside of your bread.
4. In the same pan, toast your bread (mayo side down). Let it go for a few minutes and then assemble your sandwich with a layer of mayo, dijon, and your mortadella bundles.
5. Close the sandwich, cut, and serve with a pickle. Enjoy!

Ingredients For Anthony Bourdain's 5-Ingredient Mortadella Sandwich

To make this simple sandwich, you’ll need mortadella, provolone cheese, Dijon or yellow mustard, mayonnaise and a brioche bun (or sourdough or Kaiser roll).

To start, heat up a skillet or frying pan on medium-high heat. Once it's hot, add a small amount of neutral oil to prevent the mortadella from sticking. Take 2-3 slices of mortadella and gently fold and clump them together to make three small piles.

Place each mortadella pile in the pan and let them brown and get crispy, which should take about a minute or so. Once they're crisp, flip the piles and add a slice or two of provolone cheese to each. If some provolone hangs over the side, that's even better because it will create a deliciously crispy cheese "skirt." When the other side of the mortadella is browned, carefully stack the piles on top of each other to form one big stack.

Next, toast the brioche bun in the remaining mortadella grease in the hot skillet. Once the bun is toast, spread mayo on one half and mustard on the other. Stack the mortadella on the bun and dig in.

What I Thought About Anthony Bourdain's 5-Ingredient Mortadella Sandwich

The 5-Ingredient Mortadella Sandwich is an absolute delight for those who appreciate simple, yet flavorful creations. I found the sandwich incredibly delicious, with a perfect balance of meaty and cheesy goodness. The mortadella, crisped to perfection, provides a rich, savory base, while the provolone cheese adds a creamy, melty layer that enhances every bite.

One of the best aspects of this sandwich is its simplicity. With only five ingredients, it’s incredibly easy to prepare, yet the result feels gourmet. The textures are equally impressive, with the crispy edges of the mortadella complementing the soft bread and creamy spreads.

While this sandwich is undeniably delicious, I do find it to be a bit indulgent, making it more suited for an occasional treat rather than a daily meal. Overall, though, I will definitely be making this again.
