Raising teens is no easy task — especially when they're growing up in the White House.
During her recent appearance on the Not Gonna Lie podcast with Kylie Kelce, former FLOTUS Michelle Obama opened up about the challenges of raising her daughters Sasha and Malia, who were both teenagers when their dad Barack Obama was president.

As she explained, ordinary milestones — like getting a driver's license — were more complicated for her kids, who were usually driven around by security agents.
"Once they got their licenses, I told the agents, 'They have to drive,' because you can only learn to drive by driving, you can't learn it through osmosis in the back seat of an armored car," she explained.
"So once they got their license, we got a car for them and then the agents had to figure out how to follow these teenagers to school, to parties, and it worked out — but one time Sasha got T-boned."
Thankfully, Sasha didn't get hurt — but that didn't mean her mother didn't have any concerns.
"Literally, her car was totaled, some lady T-boned her and you get this call that Sasha was in an accident. And then I thought, 'Ooh I hope the lady that hit her is okay,' because can you imagine if you T-Boned Sasha Obama!'" she recalled.
As Obama told Kelce, it was important to her to build a "community of trust" around Sasha and Malia so they could have as normal a childhood as possible.
"I didn't want them sitting home on Saturday night not understanding what it was like to be out and have a life before they went to college," she said, admitting later that she "was so glad when we got out of the White House, I wanted them to have the freedom of not having the eyes of the world on them."
"Although they still are dealing with paparazzi, being who they are and trying to carve out their own identity, they got a lot of practice in those years in the White House," Obama said.
Now 23, Sasha graduated from the University of Southern California with a degree in sociology in 2023, while Malia, 26, graduated from Harvard University in 2021 and is currently a filmmaker.
