On the April 15 episode of The Drew Barrymore Show, lifestyle contributor and Game Show Network host Valerie Bertinellirevealed a little-known tidbit of her dating history — she once dated Oscar-winning director Steven Spielberg.
At this reveal, host Drew Barrymore dropped her jaw in shock and shouted, "Steven Spielberg?!….WHAT?!…How have we never talked about this?!"
"I dated Steven for a New York minute," said Bertinelli with a laugh before giving a few details about the timeline, sharing that it was "obviously" before she met the late rocker Eddie Van Halen, whom Bertinelli married in 1981 and was with for over 20 years. They shared a son, Wolfgang.
"I went up to go read for Raiders of the Lost Ark and then [Spielberg] asked me out on a date," said Bertinelli.
That's another fun fact — apparently, Bertinelli read for the female lead in Spielberg's 1981 action flick Raiders of the Lost Ark starring Harrison Ford. The role Bertinelli read for eventually went to Karen Allen. But even though Bertinelli didn't get the part, she did get a boyfriend for a few months.
"We were together for, I don't know, 3-4 months. He still has a bowling shirt of mine, Steven, that you had in your house and I didn't get it out of the closet when we broke up, so I would like it back," cracked Bertinelli, adding that she "had a ball with him."
"I don't know you, Val!" exclaimed co-contributor Ross Mathews.
Bertinelli then said she even went to the Academy Awards with Spielberg that year, which was 1980. It was the year Sally Field won for Norma Rae, which created a huge fan-girl moment for Bertinelli.
"He invited me to the Academy Awards that year, and I went, and this was the year that I believe Sally Field won. She was in the elevator with her Oscar, and I'm a huge Sally Field fan. I've loved her forever, and I couldn't say anything. She was just beaming and beautiful, I don't know which award that was, she's won many. But yeah, that was a lot of fun," Bertinelli recalled
"Wow, did you date her too, Val?!" cracked Mathews
"I am so enthralled right now," said a still-stunned Barrymore.
Funnily enough, Bertinelli was dating Spielberg just a year before a 6-year-old Barrymore worked with Spielberg on a little-known movie called E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial.
