UAE resumes air travel with Syria

The UAE General Civil Aviation Authority announced the resumption of flights between the UAE and Syria on Monday, April 14.

The Emirates News Agency (WAM) reported a press statement from the authority, indicating that joint coordination is currently underway to complete the necessary procedures for restarting flights between the two countries, which will enhance air traffic and support the movement of passengers and cargo.

On the same day, the head of the UAE General Civil Aviation Authority met with his Syrian counterpart, Ashhad al-Salibi, on the sidelines of the ICAO Facilitation Conference 2025 held in Doha.

During the meeting, ways to enhance cooperation in the field of civil aviation between the two countries were discussed, according to the official Syrian news agency (SANA).

This step came just one day after the visit of Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa to Abu Dhabi, where he met with UAE President Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who reaffirmed his country’s support for Syria and its people during the upcoming period. During his meeting with the Syrian president, he stated that the stability of Syria and the enhancement of its security is in the interest of the entire region, reiterating his country’s stance on supporting the unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of Syria.

The Emirates News Agency mentioned that the UAE president discussed the fraternal relationships between the two countries with his Syrian counterpart and ways to enhance their joint cooperation for the benefit of both peoples.

The two sides reviewed a number of issues of mutual interest, and the meeting also addressed developments in Syria, where the UAE president emphasized the UAE’s commitment to support the Syrian people in facing the challenges of the transitional phase and rebuilding Syria in a manner that meets the aspirations of its citizens.

The UAE is the second Gulf stop in the record of foreign visits by the Syrian president since he took office in January.

The diplomatic advisor to the UAE president, Anwar Gargash, described the meeting between UAE President Mohammed bin Zayed and Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa as “successful by all measures.”

He added that the UAE, which hosts a prominent Syrian community, sees a prosperous and stable Syria as an essential pillar for the future of the region.

At the end of the visit, which lasted less than a full day, the Syrian president thanked his UAE counterpart, expressing his appreciation for the UAE’s commitment to enhancing and developing mutual relations in various fields.

For his part, the Syrian Foreign Minister, Asaad al-Shibani, stated that great achievements have been made in the UAE during the visit, especially in the areas of investment, resuming air travel, and enhancing bilateral relations in all fields.
