A yellow Met Office weather warning for rain is set to come in to force, as downpours hit parts of the UK after a weekend of warm weather.
Heavy rainfall is forecast to drench Wales as well as parts of south-west and north-west England today and Wednesday.
The warning is in place between 12pm today and midday on Wednesday, and the Met Office believes downpours could result in transport being disrupted and flooding.
Up to 40mm of rain is expected to fall across most parts of the country, and certain areas may see 50-75mm of rainfall.
The Met Office weather warning is in place between 12pm on Tuesday until midday on Wednesday (Photo: Met Office)The grim weather has been sparked by low pressure engulfing the west of the nation and follows a dry and sunny start to the month.
Met Office chief meteorologist, Matthew Lehnert, said: “After a long spell of high pressure bringing dry weather and sunshine, gloomier and unsettled conditions are on the horizon. Low pressure has become established to the west of the UK bringing cloud, rain showers, and lower temperatures for many. ”
Mr Lehnert added that a low-pressure system near Portugal has been moving towards the UK and could bring further heavy rain and thunderstorms.
Up to 40mm of rain will hit large parts of the country (Photo: Met Office)Towards the end of the week and into the long Easter weekend, there will be changeable weather, according to Met Office forecaster Craig Snell.
He said: “Some places will see rain, others some sunshine, depending on where you are in the UK on Thursday and Friday one day will be wetter than the other.
“Not cold by any means, but compared to the first week of the Easter holidays, the second week does look like a bit more of a mixed bag across the UK.”
Meanwhile, the weather in Northern Ireland will be mainly dry between Tuesday and Friday, with some scattered showers.
Fire chiefs issued a number of wildfire warnings across the UK last weekend.
On Friday 11 April, the National Fire Chiefs Council said fire and rescue services in England and Wales have responded to 380 wildfires so far this year.
The number of wildfires reported is more than double the number during the same period in 2022, which went on to be a record year.
