PAIGE Bueckers made a shock announcement about her future on the eve of the WNBA Draft.
Bueckers, 23, is expected to follow in Caitlin Clark’s footsteps and be the No. 1 overall pick.
The UConn superstar will likely be selected by the Dallas Wings in New York on Monday night.
But unlike Clark, she has agreed to sign up to a rival breakaway league.
ESPN reported that Bueckers has signed a three-year deal to play in 3-on-3 tournament Unrivaled.
Unrivaled launched this years with stars like Angel Reese involved.
It has proved more lucrative than the WNBA and exceeded $27 million in revenue during it’s debut run.
Bueckers will earn $78,831 in salary from the Wings if she is the No. 1 pick.
Her NIL worth in college stood at around $1.5 million a season.
She signed an NIL deal with Unrivaled while still in college which gave her equity in the league.
But Bueckers didn’t play in the competition from January to March this year.
The 23-year-old instead focused on college basketball and it paid off for her.
She won her first NCAA Tournament title last weekend with the Huskies.
Bueckers said earlier this year, “This is what you prepare for your whole entire life, whole entire season.
“I don’t know. I’m just excited. March is great.
“Playing during this time is great.
“We just want to continue to keep getting better and keep looking forward to the future.”
And Bueckers’ landscape is about to change much like Clark’s did this time last year.
Clark was the 2024 No. 1 overall pick by the Indiana Fever and took women’s basketball to new heights.
Bueckers will also likely draw huge attention in the WNBA.
The season begins on May 16 and the playoffs will be in September and October.
And Bueckers will now also feature in Unrivaled during the offseason over the winter.
