Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) had an afternoon to remember as the 2016 IPL finalists clinched a comfortable 9-wicket win over Rajasthan Royals in Jaipur on Sunday. Phil Salt and Virat Kohli scored half-centuries, while impact substitute Devdutt Padikkal also chipped in with a fine hand at No.3. The left-hander in the process, went past 1000 for RCB, becoming just the second Indian to do so.
Padikkal surpasses 1000 runs for RCB
Devdutt Padikkal played a handy knock of 40 off just 28 balls as RCB knocked down the Rajasthan Royals’ target of 174 with 15 balls to spare. The Karnataka superstar laced his innings with five boundaries and a maximum, playing the perfect foil to Virat Kohli at the other end.
En route his innings, he crossed 1000 runs for RCB as a player, becoming the seventh overall to reach that mark for the franchise. However, he is just the second Indian on the list, showcasing the stark gap of reliable Indian batsmen RCB have failed to find and nurture.

Devdutt Padikkal is more than 7000 shy of Virat Kohli on the list, highlighting a major flaw in RCB’s strategy over the years. The Bengaluru-based franchise has always relied on overseas exports to shoulder their batting, leaving little to do for their Indian batters. As a result, none of the Indian batters have developed in the manner Kohli has. He has been ever-present for the franchise since 2008.

Virat Kohli – 8252 Devdutt Padikkal – 1003 Rajat Padtidar – 985 Dinesh Karthik – 937 Rahul Dravid – 898Over the years, IPL winning teams have relied on their Indian core to lead them to wins, with the same strategy at heart in both of Mumbai Indians’ and Chennai Super Kings’ IPL dynasties. Padikkal has now reached a mark which seemed foreign for many, even the likes of stalwarts such as Rahul Dravid and Dinesh Karthik. However, it is important to note that Padikkal’s record was only possible after he was bought back in the IPL auction, having previously been released.
RCB, however, are trying to fix the issue, with Rajat Patidar now well placed to reach the milestone soon. The RCB captain is 15 shy of the mark, and could very well achieve it in the next IPL 2025 game.
