Nanoleaf’s smart lighting elevates more than just the mood — it brings new life to a space
buy form amazonOver the past couple of months, I started working on a home office renovation complete with new wall colors, a new desk setup, and a totally new layout. One thing I wanted to do was strip everything I had on the walls and start fresh. I needed a new feeling in that room. One element I looked into when deciding on how to change the design was Nanoleaf. This product has been a staple in my home and office since they arrived on the scene back in 2013. I had the original Nanoleaf Panels on one wall in my office and a bundle that included the Triangles and small Triangles on another wall. As much as I loved those setups, I wanted a fresh, new look. So, I added the Nanoleaf Lines.

User Experience
The reason I went with Nanoleaf over another type of lighting installation was that they work with Apple HomeKit. The lighting elements work exceptionally well even without being connected to a smart assistant, but since I prefer to keep my smart devices Apple-centric, Nanoleaf was the natural choice.
Since this isn’t the first Nanoleaf installation I’ve completed, I can say with some authority that you want to take the time to plan out the design and location of your lights. Our setup started with the Smarter Kit and one expansion set. So we had a total of 12 lines. I wasn’t sure what I wanted to put on my wall, but I knew I wanted it to be unique and really set my desk area off from the rest of my office. So, I started with the design book that Nanoleaf provided and then expanded my search to the Internet.
When I settled on a design I was happy with, I started prepping the installation area above my desk. I have discovered that the best tools to have for this sort of project are a level, measuring tape, and painters’ tape. I use the measuring tape to ensure that the location of the lighting installation is precise, and then I mock up the design using the painters’ tape. This way, I know before sticking anything to the wall that I like the location and design. While the adhesive strips can be removed, it is a difficult, tedious process, and pieces of wall or paint inevitably come off with the sticky stuff.
For my installation, I measured the distance between my ceiling and the top of my monitor. Then I determined where the center of that measurement was and laid out the design with the tape. I highly recommend taking the time to do these steps because it will save you a lot of pain. I also recommend laying out the pieces of the design you choose on the floor (or other flat surface) before you stick them to the wall. We went through several iterations of the same design until we found the optimum size and rotation of the lighting installation.
Our wall was freshly painted, but I still wiped it off with damp and dry cloths before I started sticking anything on the wall. This helps to ensure the lights will stick. With the Nanoleaf Lines, there are two main parts to be concerned about — the line and the connector. The connector piece acts as a link between the different line segments, and the lines just snap into them. One of the things I like about the Nanoleaf Lines that is different from the other Nanoleaf light installations is that the only things that stick to the walls are the connectors. The line segments are held together by the connectors.
Once all the design decisions and prep work were completed, the installation of the lights only took about 30 minutes. The one thing you want to be cautious about is ensuring your segments are level. Once you get the first couple in place, the rest of the segments will line up properly, but you will still want to make sure they are level since the connectors can turn. After you have the lines and connectors placed, you snap the skins on top.
The standard kit comes with white skins, but you can choose to get the black ones instead. The black skins provide a slightly muted lighting effect, and the light tends to bounce off the wall more than shine through the skins like it does with the white skins. This was the effect I was going for since the Nanoleaf installation is directly above my desk.
I love the ambience that the Nanoleaf Lines provide, as well as the added design element in my office. I use these lighting installations as artwork in my office, and I really love how this one turned out. I modified the design a bit so that the power cable dropped behind my 3D printer and wasn’t an eyesore.
Conclusion
The Nanoleaf Lines 60 Degrees Smarter Kit with Black Skins is more than just smart lighting—it’s functional wall art that enhances the mood, creativity, and aesthetics of any room. Whether you’re creating a visually striking gaming setup or a calming home office environment, these lights elevate the space.
