The One Lip Care Mistake Causing Dryness and Wrinkles, Dermatologist Warns

It doesn’t matter your age; everyone can get dry, cracked and wrinkly lips at times. Cold, dry and windy weather can cause chapped lips, as can sun exposure and even artificial heat indoors. There are even certain conditions unrelated to weather that can seem to contribute to your lips’ unquenchable thirst. And you (yes you!) could be unknowingly worsening the problem. According to board-certified dermatologist and popular dermatology influencer Andrea Suarez, better known on the internet as Dr. Dray, says that using all those fancy “lip care” products could actually be the cause of your chronically dry and wrinkled lips.

That’s right, your lip balms, masks, chapsticks and scrubs might be to blame. While acknowledging that they feel like help when you initially put them on, in a video shared on TikTok (@drdrayzday), Dr. Dray says, “They can contain ingredients that ultimately aggravate the condition for you in the long run.” Using these products, which further aggravate the skin barrier of your lips and lead to moisture loss, can create a never-ending cycle of dry, cracked lips that you soothe with the products that further dry them out. “The best bet is to just stick to plain, 100% petroleum jelly,” according to the popular dermatologist.

Dr. Dray recommends sticking to Vaseline, as it has only one ingredient and is the most effective in her book. It should help your dry lips regardless of the cause, but it can also be helpful to consider a multi-pronged approach to solving the problem.

Avoid Licking Your Lips: Saliva is irritating to the thing skin on your lips, as it's full of digestive enzymes that break down the barrier that locks in moisture. While lip-licking is a habit of many who suffer from dry lips as a way to ease the dryness temporarily, it will only further exacerbate the dryness over time.Use Sunscreen When Outdoors: If outdoors for long periods of time, it’s just as important to protect your lips from the sun as it is the rest of your body—they can burn! Even if they don’t fully burn, prolonged sun exposure can dry out the lips, so lather on the SPF (preferably one with a simple, gentle formula so as not to put irritating ingredients on your lips that will dry them out anyway).Be Mindful of Your Other Skincare Products: Products with harsh exfoliants can get on your lips while you’re applying them to your face and further irritate the delicate skin.Stay Hydrated: As lack of moisture is a big contributor to chapped lips, it makes sense to try to hydrate your whole body to treat the problem from the inside out.

While Dr. Dray is a firm believer in less is more when it comes to lip products, some dermatologists recommend the application of a very simple hyaluronic acid formula underneath the petroleum jelly. Hyaluronic acid is a humectant, meaning it attracts and holds water to maintain hydration. If you’ve tried what feels like everything to heal your chapped lips and are still faced with the problem, consider talking to your doctor, as chronic chapped lips can sometimes be a sign of a vitamin deficiency (like iron or B6).
