Kent State has parted ways with head coach Kenni Burns, the program announced on Friday morning.
The move comes just a couple of weeks after Burns was placed on administrative leave by the university. Kent State has not publicly given a reason for the investigation or the subsequent firing.
“At this time, our focus will be to support our student-athletes and provide them with the best opportunity to have a positive and competitive experience,” Kent State athletic director Randale Richmond said in a statement.
Kent State also announced that offensive coordinator Mark Carney will serve as the program’s interim head coach in 2025. Carney has been with the program since 2023 and is a former college quarterback at Fordham.
While no official reason for Burns’ firing was given, it’s possible there were personal issues that led to this firing. Last November, Burns was the subject of a lawsuit from a bank claiming almost $24,000 in unpaid credit card bills. Burns addressed the debt in a statement given to CBS Sports:
“My wife and I are aware of a legal matter involving debt related to paying off a recent remodel and move,” Burns wrote in a statement. “We are working swiftly to address this matter.”
On the field, Burns also struggled to produce results. Kent State went just 1-23 during his 2 seasons as Kent State’s head coach.
