Shafaq News/ The United Nations isinvestigating dozens of Israeli airstrikes in Gaza that reportedly resulted incasualties limited to women and children, the UN Office of the HighCommissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) announced on Friday.
The agency is reviewing 36 incidentsbetween March 18 and April 9 where all documented victims were women orchildren. During the same period, around 224 Israeli strikes reportedly hitresidential buildings and tents sheltering displaced people.
OHCHR spokesperson Ravina Shamdasaniwarned the level of destruction threatens the ability of Palestinians tocontinue living in Gaza. She noted the attacks raise “serious concerns” aboutIsrael’s compliance with international humanitarian law.
“Deliberately targeting civilians notdirectly involved in hostilities constitutes a war crime under the GenevaConventions,” she added.
She also described the killing ofPalestinian journalists as part of a “broader, alarming pattern.” On the nightof April 6–7, an Israeli strike reportedly hit a tent near the Nasser MedicalComplex in Khan Younis, where several journalists were known to be staying.Reports indicated the strike occurred without prior warning.
Israel’s closure of Gaza bordercrossings for six consecutive weeks has further worsened humanitarianconditions by blocking the entry of food, clean water, medicine, and otheressential supplies, Shamdasani said.
The war in Gaza has faced mountinginternational scrutiny over Israel’s military conduct in populated areas. UNagencies and aid organizations have repeatedly warned of high civilian deathtolls and severely restricted access to humanitarian assistance.
