Six people died in a helicopter crash in the Hudson River in New York City, off Manhattan on Thursday.
The New York City Fire Department (FDNY) stated that they received a report of a helicopter going down in the river at approximately 3:17 PM.
The crash occurred in the river near Houston Street and the Holland Tunnel. Social media footage showed the helicopter upside down with water engulfing most of it.
The FDNY mentioned that its units were conducting rescue operations at the crash site, and several rescue boats were visible in the footage navigating around the helicopter.
Rescue boats were near the site, close to the Manhattan waterfront, not far from a long maintenance pier.
Fire trucks and other emergency vehicles were dispatched near the crash location.
Local reports indicated that an official from a major company was on board the helicopter.
Later, the Mayor of New York City clarified that it involved an executive from Siemens, emphasizing that he, his wife, and their children were on the helicopter.
He added, “Six individuals were on board the helicopter that crashed in the Hudson River.”
He reported that all those on board the helicopter, three adults and three children, had died.
ABC News also stated that it involved Agustin Escobar, a Siemens technology executive based in Germany.
