PLACENTIA — The La Habra softball team has pretty much dominated its opponents in the Freeway League this season, with the exception being El Dorado.
That didn’t change Thursday when the two teams met for the second time and it produced another one-run game.
This time the teams battled through nine innings at El Dorado High and the Highlanders eventually walked away with a 2-1 victory.
Angelina Renteria scored from third on a passed ball in the ninth as the first-place Highlanders improved to 6-0 in league and 15-6 overall.
El Dorado (13-9, 3-3) is tied for second place with Sonora (14-4, 3-3).
El Dorado lost to La Habra 6-5 in the teams’ first meeting March 25. The Highlanders cruised to wins against the other league opponents by margins of 9-1, 12-0, 15-0 and 11-0.
El Dorado had a chance to score the winning run in the eighth inning. It loaded the bases with one out, but La Habra pitcher Maddison Payne retired the next two hitters on pop ups in the infield to get out of the jam.
“Maddison Payne has been really tough,” La Habra coach Vince Peralta said. “She put the ball where we needed to be and she got the ball to be put in play and we got the outs. She executed, she hit her spots. … We preach defense all the time and we work on defense all the time and that’s one of our biggest strong suits is our defense and pitching.”
El Dorado took a 1-0 lead in the second on an RBI single from Kaitlyn Clark.
La Habra’s Georgia Rickenbacker then singled to lead off the fifth, took second on a fielder’s choice and came in to score on a single from Alyssa Hernandez to make it 1-1.
After neither team could score in the seventh, the contest went to extra innings.
El Dorado freshman pitcher Emily Yoon got the side in order in the eighth.
Renteria doubled to lead off the ninth for La Habra and went to third on a sacrifice bunt from Andrea Langenberg.
Then came the passed ball, allowing Renteria to score the eventual winning run.
“I’m so proud of everybody on the team,” Payne said. “We’re 6-0. I’m so excited to keep going forward with everybody and just going through a league and finishing off strong.”
