Cleveland’s controversial franchise quarterback isn’t ready to close the door.
Deshaun Watson subtly fired back at what Jimmy Haslam had to say about him at the NFL‘s Annual League Meeting.
The Cleveland Browns owner was candid about Watson’s time in Northeast Ohio.
“We took a big swing and miss with Deshaun,” Haslam said, via Daniel Oyefusi of ESPN.
“We thought we had the quarterback, we didn’t and we gave up a lot of draft picks to get him. So we’ve got to dig ourselves out of that hole.
“[The trade] was an entire organization decision and it ends with Dee and I, so hold us accountable.”
The trade saw Cleveland give up three-first round picks, a third-round pick and two fourth-round picks to the Houston Texans for Watson back in March of 2022.
Since then, Watson has appeared in a grand total of 19 games out of a possible 52 over the last three seasons.
He is currently rehabbing his right Achilles tendon after rerupturing it, putting his entire 2025 season in jeopardy.
But none of that is stopping the former Pro-Bowler from believing in himself.
Watson took to Instagram to put out a clear message, he still believes he is a starting quarterback in the National Football League.
“Everyone’s doubting me,” Watson said.
Watson still views himself as a starting quarterbackGetty“Everyone don’t believe in me.
“Everyone don’t think that I can get back to where I was. But I know and I believe the work that I put in, what I believe in myself.
“The peace that I’ve been channeling these last couple months, I know I’m going to be way better than before.”
It’s noteworthy that Watson’s video of himself takes place inside the Browns facility as he continues his rehab.
While Haslam was more straightforward with his message to the public about Watson, head coach Kevin Stefanski was more buttoned up.
“[Watson is] doing a great job with rehab,” Browns coach Kevin Stefanski said at the league meeting.
“He’s in there every single day working very hard, but he’s where he is supposed to be in the rehab and then we’ll just kind of take that one day by day.”
Watson’s future in Cleveland remains unclear, but what’s certain is that the Browns still owe him $46 million in each of the next two seasons and have $173 million in cap hits remaining on his contract.
While they have restructured his $230 million fully guaranteed contract a few times, the point still remains the same.
It has been undeniably the worst contract given to a player.
And Haslam has only himself to blame, as he finally admitted.
