Response work continues Thursday on the oil and gas release at the Bishop Well south of Galeton.
The Galeton Fire Protection District responded to a release Sunday evening at Bishop Well, an oil and gas facility south of Weld County Road 74. An evacuation order went into place for residents within a half-mile radius of the well pad, a zone that impacted 12 people
Galeton Elementary School’s proximity to the release resulted in a closure since Monday. As a precaution, the school will remain closed Friday, according to a Weld County update Thursday.
Since Sunday, multiple agencies have responded to the scene in addition to Galeton Fire, including Weld County Emergency Management, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Chevron.
The response team — representatives from Galeton Fire, Weld County Office of Emergency Management, Chevron and other organizations — will host a community meeting to update the nearby residents at 6 p.m. Thursday at Galeton Fire Station No. 2.
Well containment procedures began Thursday, the county update said. Ongoing efforts also include containment and removal of liquids from the site as well as air quality monitoring, which has received results below levels of concern.
Response activities on Wednesday included air and water monitoring, assistance for area residents, planning recovery efforts and preparation of specialized equipment to move forward with well containment, according to the update.
Weld County advises residents with livestock to contact their veterinarian for evaluation and monitoring.
