Race Across the World 2025 – start date, route and teams

Take your starting positions. Race Across the World is back for a new series pushing competitors to their limits in a contest where every second counts.

Five teams of two are lined up, ready to backpack on a budget without a bank card or smartphone.

Instead, they will have to rely on maps, cash, and the kindness of strangers to get to their final destination and the £20,000 prize.

This is the fifth series of the hit BBC show, which has seen couples race across Europe, Asia, South America and Canada. There have also been two celebrity spin-off versions.

Now, ten intrepid travellers face a fresh challenge: to reach the last stop first, they will have to cross tricky terrain and politically unpredictable regions.

Race Across the World starts on BBC One on Wednesday 23 April at 9pm.

This series will have nine hour-long episodes, with each broadcast weekly on Wednesdays.

All will be available to stream after airing on the BBC iPlayer along with previous series.

Where are they travelling this time?

The five duos must race more than 14,000km across Asia, the world’s largest continent, taking in China, Nepal and India.

This time, they’ve got to do it with the lowest budget in the show’s history- just over £1,000 per person, the cash equivalent of flying the route.

The teams will travel from northeastern China to the southernmost tip of India, Kanniyakumari, a pilgrimage site where three seas converge.

They will have to navigate the two most populous countries in the world, India and China, with more than 1.4 billion people.

In China, contestants will travel through trailblazing cities, ancient towns, and villages to reach the heart of the Himalayas in Nepal, home to eight of the world’s ten highest mountains.

Then, they will head to India, home to more than 700 spoken languages, taking in 13 of its 28 states to reach the southernmost tip.

The race begins at the Great Wall of China, overlooking the village of Huanghuacheng, 80km north of Beijing.

For the first leg, teams will need to travel from the Great Wall to the capital, which is twice the size of London and has six major train stations, and then out again to reach the first checkpoint, Huangling.

The more adventurous can choose a route that carves its way inland, or those looking for the safer option can take the well-trodden path that uses China’s extensive high-speed train network running along the coast through Shanghai.

Five pairs are participating in this race, spanning the age range from 18 to 65.The youngest duo are Fin, 18, and Sioned, 19, a teenage couple from Carmarthen, Wales.

They are keen to explore the world beyond the boundaries of their tiny village. But will the exuberance and enthusiasm of youth be enough to beat the expertise and experience of age?

At the other end of the spectrum are Brian, 62, a retired financial advisor, and Melvyn, 65, a driving instructor.

The brothers are hoping to reconnect, having spent little time together since childhood.

Despite differing approaches to travel, they are keen to discover if they have any common ground on this journey.
