Rising Tide Film Festival to be held at Bama Theatre

The second annual Rising Tide Film Festival will take place at the Bama Theatre for the first time on April 18.

Previously named the Black Warrior Film Festival, which operated for over 10 years, the Rising Tide Film Festival provides an opportunity for student-directed short films from all over the country to be showcased in Tuscaloosa.

“There’s a real difference in going to a film festival versus just kind of going to the movies,” said Landon Palmer, assistant professor in the journalism and creative media department and the faculty advisor for the festival. “Going to the movies is great, I do it on a regular basis, but when you go to a film festival, what you do is you encounter people with other active interests in film, and you start conversations.”

In addition to the festival, this is the first year that the UA Student Showcase — a presentation of films directed by creative media students — is taking place.

The festival is student-run and operated, and Jake Bennett, director of the festival and a junior majoring in computer science and creative media, said the festival had open submissions for six months and received more than 100 films. In the end, over 30 videos were chosen and broken up into different categories, including horror, comedy, drama, experimental and documentary.

“It’s really interesting to see what the next generation of filmmakers are already making,” Bennett said.

The festival will run from 11 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., with the student showcase following directly after. Throughout the day, in addition to the short films and awards, there will be guest speakers  sharing their experiences in the film industry.

While tickets are free, people are encouraged to reserve their spot ahead of time either through the Rising Tide website or at Bama Theatre.

“I think film is really about shaping perspectives,” Bennett said. “There’s something so powerful about seeing the story through someone else’s eyes, seeing how this author views the world, and watching their writing, their sound design, their visuals, all come together. It really feels like seeing someone else’s world.”
