Head coach Kalen DeBoer spoke Friday evening after the team held a scrimmage almost a week before Alabama’s annual A-Day game.
After the scrimmage he spoke on the amount of reps they’ve been able to get in the past two scrimmages, which is around 115. He also said that the reps were split almost 50/50 with the first and second team, and the third team got the remaining reps.
Through the offseason, there has been much talk about who the starting quarterback may be as the 2025 season inches closer and spring practice slowly nears its end.
According to multiple sources, the favorite for the job is redshirt junior Ty Simpson.
There has been much talk, however, that 5-star freshman and early enrollee Keelon Russell has been impressing throughout the spring, potentially enough to start.
“Keelon’s doing a great job, but with Ty and Austin [Mack], Keelon definitely works in with the [second team],” DeBoer said. “He’ll get [first team] reps from time to time, but that’s no indication of where we really feel he’s at.”
However, it is not just a two-way battle. Redshirt sophomore Austin Mack, who transferred from Washington before last season, is the third quarterback in the mix.
The potential is there, and it hasn’t been hidden. Fans saw a few looks at him in-game last season, with him even throwing a touchdown in the final minutes of Alabama’s win against Mercer.
His performance and progress have been kept relatively quiet, but that may not be purposeful. There’s just arguably more attention on Simpson and Russell.
Some have speculated that Mack’s relationship with DeBoer and new Alabama offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb, who all spent time in Washington together, may provide him with an advantage in the battle, as there is already some familiarity.
DeBoer has not given anything concrete about who is winning the battle for starting quarterback, but reps with first and second teams in practice could be a sign.
“They’re all three making throws, making some big-time throws,” DeBoer said. “I thought they all moved the chains at times. Maybe when they had their backs against the wall, maybe some second- and third-and-long situations, where they found a way to make a big throw.”
It isn’t likely that a starting quarterback will be named during the offseason. Fans will likely have to wait until closer to next season for a firm answer on who the quarterback will be, if there even is a concrete starter by the start of the season.
With A-Day next Saturday, fans will have the chance to get an early look at the quarterbacks and other positions throughout the day. However, fans will have to be at the event, as A-Day will not be televised, unlike previous years. Alabama announced this year that it would be doing away with its typical A-Day format and instead moving to a 90-minute practice format featuring different situational and positional drills.
A-Day will take place Saturday in Bryant-Denny Stadium at noon CT.
