Dan Feuerriegel on Revisiting ‘Days of Our Lives Controversial Storyline

This spring, Days of our Lives did the unexpected and revisited one of the soap’s most controversial storylines, exploring E.J’s assault of Sami.

Actor Dan Feuerriegel spoke with Soap Opera Digest, discussing what it was like returning to a storyline he didn’t originally portray. The actor explained that he didn’t do any research prior to filming the scenes where his son, Johnny (Carson Boatman) confronted him over his conception. “It made that a lot more natural and easier to play. I was just discovering everything when Carson was yelling at me,”  Feuerriegel said.

Fans will remember that back in December 2006, Sami went on a romantic cabin getaway with her on-again/off-again love interest Lucas “Roberts” Horton (Bryan Dattilo) when tragedy struck, and Lucas was trapped as the roof of the cabin collapsed . Desperate for help, Sami ran to the street to find help. There she ran into E.J. (James Scott), on the run for having shot her stepfather John Black (Drake Hogestyn). E.J. forced Sami to help him avoid a police checkpoint, and afterward offered to assist her and save Lucas’s life, but in exchange E.J. explained that he was tasked by his father Stefano (Joseph Mascolo) to “plant the DiMera seed” with the Brady of his choice, and Sami was to be given the honor. After discussing the situation, Sami gave in to E.J.’s demands, thus conceiving her son John “Johnny” Roman DiMera (Carson Boatman). E.J. proceeds to hold up his end of the deal and saves Lucas’s life.

Now, 19 years later, the ripple effects of the storyline are playing out as Johnny’s grandfather Roman (Josh Taylor) and step-grandmother Kate (Lauren Koslow) revealed the circumstances of his conception, ultimately leading to a heated exchange between father and son, and setting up the perfect motive for Johnny to be a lead suspect in the tale of “Who Shot E.J.”

Discussing what it was like to play out the confrontation scenes with his on-screen son, Feuerriegel explained, “There was nothing he could say. There was no way that he could weasel his way out of it. There was no justification. The challenge was that E.J. had to really firmly believe that he was, shall we say, backed into a corner to get Sami, to do something like that.”

Feuerriegel believes that the story has helped shape his character. “It creates three dimensions to characters and three dimensions to situations, because nothing is necessarily fully black and white,” he believes that Sami’s rape is something that lingers in the back of his mind, that it’s something that haunts him to the day and shapes who he is all these years later. “Also, this storyline gives you permission to kind of be like, ‘All right, let’s try and find some little bits of color to everything.’ And that is what I enjoy bringing to the character.”

Teasing what’s to come, Days of our Lives Breakdown Writer Jamey Giddenstook to X about writing one of the episodes with the fallout of this story, stating, “I wrote the breakdown/outline for the upcoming episode of #DAYS, where Sami and Johnny share a painful, powerful, and poignant conversation about his conception.”

Days of our Lives streams weekdays on Peacock.
