Diamondbacks’ Pavin Smith, Josh Naylor hit back-to-back home runs vs. O’s

PHOENIX — Arizona Diamondbacks three- and four-hole hitters Pavin Smith and Josh Naylor cranked back-to-back home runs off Baltimore Orioles pitcher Dean Kremer during a five-run fifth inning on Wednesday.

Naylor’s homer gave the D-backs a 5-0 lead, and Arizona pushed the advantage to 7-0 while looking to finish off a series win.

Smith ran into a cutter and splashed it straight into the Chase Field pool. He now owns the most recent two cannon balls, per se, as he hit one at the end of last year.

The pool shot was the 40th instance in which a Diamondbacks player hit a home run directly into the water, per the club.

That was Smith’s first home run of the season. He hit nine in 60 games last year and has been trusted with an increased role this season given the departure of Joc Pederson.

Naylor followed with a first-pitch line drive over the right-field wall, his first home run as a member of the Diamondbacks. He hit 31 bombs last year with the Cleveland Guardians before an offseason traded sent him out west. He leads the team with five doubles so far.

Naylor started the game with a sacrifice fly and a single to the left side, and he took advantage of a splitter in the zone to pull it deep to right.

Smith and Naylor are the first Diamondbacks to hit back-to-back home runs this season. The last duo to do so was Josh Bell and Eugenio Suarez last September in Milwaukee.

Jake McCarthy is on the board

After the home runs, Alek Thomas walked, and Jake McCarthy stepped in against Baltimore left-handed Cionel Perez.

McCarthy entered the at-bat 0-for-24 to start the season, the most at-bats without a hit to start a season in franchise history. And he snapped that streak with a double lined the other way.

With runners on second and third, Tim Tawa lined a single to left field to bring home both runners.
