Longtime Schat’s employee Richie Henderson was honored with a plaque Sunday during the second annual “Disability Awareness Day” held at Alex R. Thomas Jr. Plaza in Ukiah.
Brook Gamble, director of communications and engagement for the Mendocino County Office of Education, said Henderson received the only award given out at the April 6 event, which was described by organizers as a way to “bring the community together to recognize and celebrate the diverse abilities of our members.”
On the award Henderson received, event organizers noted that “this year, we are proud to honor Richie Henderson for his contributions to our community, and his inspiring example of inclusion and perseverance.”
For more than two decades, Henderson, the son of retired Superior Court Judge Richard Henderson and former Ukiah Mayor Colleen Henderson, has worked at Schat’s Bakery downtown, where owner Zach Schat said this week he was happy to have his longtime employee back busing tables and greeting regulars after winning a “tough bout with pneumonia,” just another example of the Ukiah native’s dedication and perseverance.
Once Henderson reached the 20-year mark at the bakery a couple of years ago, Schat put up a billboard honoring Henderson along Highway 101 for motorists to see as they enter the city limits.
“He is our son, but there is no doubt he is family to just about everyone in town,” Judge Henderson was quoted as saying in a previous UDJ story about the billboard.
As for this year’s Disability Awareness Day, Isaac Ramey, Mendocino County Office of Education Senior Director of Special Education, was quoted as saying in a press release that “Fabiola Olimon Ramos organized last year’s inaugural event, and we’re excited to help continue this tradition. It’s a great opportunity for us to highlight the importance of inclusion and celebrate the contributions of every member of our community.”
The release also explained that the event was “sponsored by the Mendocino County Office of Education and coordinated by Mendocino County SELPA (Special Education Local Area Plan), which supports approximately 1,800 students with disabilities county-wide in accessing the local services and resources they need to succeed in school and beyond. Community partners for the event included: Courageous Engagement, Finance for People, MendoLEAP, Mendocino County Blue Zones Project, Mendocino County Department of Rehabilitation, Raise & Shine Resource Center, Redwood Coast Regional Center, Redwood Community Services, SELPA Community Advisory Committee, and Ukiah Unified School District.”
