Galeton Fire Department to host community meeting for residents on Bishop well site

A community meeting will be held for Galeton residents Thursday evening to give updates on the Bishop Well site oil and gas release earlier this week, Weld County said Wednesday.

The meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Galeton Fire Station #2, at 33535 Highway 392.  Representatives from the Galeton Fire Department, the Weld County Office of Emergency Management, Chevron and others will be in attendance to speak with residents.

Weld County announced the meeting in its joint information center release Wednesday morning.

The Galeton Fire Protection District about 6 p.m. Sunday learned about the release at the Bishop Well, which is an oil and gas facility south of Weld County Road 74, the fire department said in a social media post Monday morning.

The fire district reported it implemented an evacuation order as a precaution for 12 residents within a one-half-mile radius of the well pad, Galeton Fire said.

“Our priority remains the safety and security of our neighbors, workers and environment,” Weld County said in its Wednesday morning update.

Galeton Elementary is expected to remain closed at least through Thursday, according to the county and Eaton School District. The school district will update the community by noon Thursday on whether Galeton Elementary will resume operations on Friday.

Those with livestock should contact their veterinarians to evaluate and monitor their animals. If you have questions or need assistance with boarding or relocating livestock, please contact Chevron at (877) 359-1285.

The Weld County Joint Information Center has established a Community Information Line at (970) 400-4264. Public information updates can be found at Bishop Well Incident.

The goals of the work at the site Wednesday will include: additional equipment removal to allow for the next stage of response and preparing the site for Thursday work to halt the release.

The county said several goals were met during work at the site Tuesday. Equipment was safely removed, air monitoring continued in and around the well pad and evacuation zone. Results of those tests indicated levels below concern for public health.

Multiple agencies joined Galeton Fire in the response, including Weld Emergency Management, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Chevron.
