Five-car pileup, including police vehicles, closes A1

The recent five-car pileup on the A1 near Denton, Newcastle, highlights significant concerns regarding road safety and emergency response protocols. Pictures of the scene show a car which appears to have flipped over and is leaning upright against the central reservation.

The road is closed between Swalwell, in Gateshead, and Denton, Newcastle, following the “multi-vehicle” incident at around 2.30am, the Highways Agency said.

BBC Radio Newcastle reporter Rebecca O'Neill said one of the cars was missing its roof.

She said people crossing a footpath near to the scene heard a police helicopter hovering over the area for a "good couple of hours" overnight.

Drivers have been advised to find alternative routes if possible.
