Former Florida guard Riley Kugel is well removed from his days as a Gator, but he wasn’t going to let Monday night’s grand occasion go by without giving a shout out to the first stop on his college basketball whirlwind.
Kugel, who starred in high school in Orlando before heading to Gainesville to play for UF from 2022-24, will always have some blue and orange blood running through him. That’s the truth even though he transferred to SEC rival Mississippi State for last season and is transferring yet again, this time ending up near his Orlando roots at UCF for his final season of eligibility.
Kugel might have been a Bulldog and now will be a Knight, but he didn’t forget the place where it all began collegiately. He made the SEC All-Freshman Team in 2023, so he was off to a flying start in Gainesville before playing another season there and then heading elsewhere.
But Kugel and Florida will always have a connection, and on Tuesday afternoon, the day after Florida captured its third national championship with a dramatic victory over Houston, Kugel went to his social media account to give some love to the Gators.
Kugel’s post included a big red heart at the end of it, to show that, yes, he still has that orange and blue blood, even if he’s long gone from Gainesville.
