NORTH CAROLINA (PINPOINT WEATHER) -- It is that time of the year, the tug of war between cold and warm air as we push towards the summer.
Eventually, the warm air is going to win out, but we still have a few cooler days and nights to deal with.
A hard freeze occurs when temperatures drop to or below freezing. However, the air temperature just needs to be near freezing for frost to form. This is because air temperature is measured a little off the surface.
The air above the surface takes longer to cool down than the surface itself. This means the air temperature may be 35 degrees, but the surface temperature is 32 degrees, allowing dew to freeze and create frost. If you introduce windy conditions overnight, this allows the warmer air to mix towards the surface, preventing the surface temperature from freezing.
Clear skies are also needed for frost to form, as that allows warmer air to escape into the atmosphere and cool the ground quickly. Clouds act as a blanket and trap heat. We also need moisture in the air, which allows the dew to form.
The easiest way to protect your plants is to take them inside. However, if you have a larger garden, you can’t just take it inside. The best way to protect those larger plants or big gardens is to use a frost cloth or brooder lights.
Frost cloths can trap warmer air for your plants and keep them from freezing and frost from forming. Brooder lights and or heat lamps are another good way to keep your plants warm on very cold nights.
The 5-gallon bucket method is also used widely. If you are going to cover your plants with a 5-gallon bucket, it is best to use a frost cloth first. The plastic from the bucket can actually burn your plants if it comes in contact with them.
Freezes have happened in late April and even early May in Charlotte, but it is highly uncommon. The average last freeze in Charlotte occurs on March 28.
To be safe, it is best to hold off on any growing of sensitive plants until around mid-April.
