Vance slams McConnell: Votes show political pettiness

Vice President Vance on Tuesday slammed former Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (Ky.) for voting against President Trump’s pick for a top Pentagon role, characterizing it as an act of "political pettiness."

“Mitch’s vote today—like so much of the last few years of his career—is one of the great acts of political pettiness I’ve ever seen,” Vance said in a post on social media platform X.

McConnell was the only Republican to vote against Elbridge Colby to serve as undersecretary of policy at the Pentagon, the No. 3 role at the Defense Department.

Colby was confirmed Tuesday in a 54-45 vote, with three Democrats — Sens. Jack Reed (R.I.), Mark Kelly (Ariz.) and Elissa Slotkin (Mich.), who all sit on the Armed Services panel — voting with Republicans to approve his nomination.

In a statement explaining his vote, McConnell took issue with Colby’s past statements that the U.S. should turn its national security focus toward the Indo-Pacific and away from other areas, warning of “geostrategic self-harm.”

“The prioritization that Mr. Colby argues is fresh, new, and urgently needed is, in fact, a return to an Obama-era conception of a la carte geostrategy. Abandoning Ukraine and Europe and downplaying the Middle East to prioritize the Indo-Pacific is not a clever geopolitical chess move,” said McConnell, who has served in the Senate for four decades and has had a contentious relationship with President Trump.

“It is geostrategic self-harm that emboldens our adversaries and drives wedges between America and our allies for them to exploit," the longtime Republican leader added.

McConnell, who does not plan to run for reelection, also voted against the confirmations of Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.
