Michael Chandler’s highlight-reel knockout at UFC 274 was a brutal reminder of his devastating power.
Chandler is gearing up for a fight with Paddy Pimblett this weekend at UFC 314 — one the latter has described as the biggest of his career.
Pimblett knows the threat that stands before him and his dreams to earn a future UFC lightweight title shot.
For those unfamiliar with Chandler’s deadly power, one look back at that Tony Ferguson finish says it all.
Chandler had entered the UFC just one year prior as a three-time Bellator lightweight champion, having been victorious against the baddest men on the planet.
However, nothing would have topped his vicious KO of ‘El Cucuy’ in May 2022, which remains one of greatest stoppages in UFC history.
The pair met at the Footprint Centre in Phoenix, Arizona, on a stacked main card headlined by fellow lightweights Justin Gaethje and Charles Oliveira, who for the interim 155lb title.
‘Iron’ came out as his usual energetic self, utilising his fast jab to try and work down his American counterpart.
But it was Chandler who hit the canvas first, as Ferguson caught him with a left hook that made him stumble, before both men turned the fight into a scrap.
Chandler found success when he speared Ferguson into the ground at the midway point, but started to leak heavily after he was caught with some nasty elbows on the canvas.
The rest of round one was spent on the floor, and Ferguson knew he was up on the judges’ scorecards, having landed the more damaging blows
However, things quickly took a dramatic turn when Chandler emerged for the second five minutes with a renewed sense of focus.
Chandler scored one of the wildest knockouts in UFC history against FergusonUSA Today SportsHe began sizing up his opponent, patiently waiting for an opportunity to present itself.
Then, in an instant, the very first strike came of the round came with Chandler pressing forward, as he found his opening.
Ferguson’s head was slightly forward, so Chandler stepped in and landed a lethal front straight to the chin with flawless precision, and it was clear that no follow-up was necessary.
Ferguson dropped like a deck chair and was out cold before he even hit the canvas.
For a split second, all UFC commentator Joe Rogan could do was scream into his microphone, as he was utterly stunned by the sheer brutality of the KO.
The kick had sent shockwaves through the Phoenix arena, leaving the crowd in awe.

Fellow UFC pundit Daniel Cormier completely missed the knockout, and added: “Nobody has stopped Tony Ferguson like that!”
“I look at you, look back, and he was on the ground.”
Chandler, unsurprisingly, was awarded a $50,000 Performance of the Night bonus for his stunning KO.
However, that was his last win in the Octagon and the 38-year-old now finds himself preparing for a new wave of talent in MMA’s biggest league.
‘Iron’ takes on Liverpool’s fan-favourite Pimblett at UFC 314 this weekend in a highly anticipated five-round co-main event bout.
Chandler is seeking to keep his name up there with the very best in the world, while for Pimblett the fight could have huge repercussions on his future world title hopes.
It’s only Chandler’s seventh fight in Dana White’s promotion, but his viral knockout that will be forever etched into UFC history makes it feel like he’s been around for so much longer.
Before flying out to Miami before the fight, Pimblett warned Chandler to be ready for the best version of himself come Saturday night.
“I really am in the shape of my life! Chandler ain’t ready people believe that,” he wrote on social media.
The 30-year-old Liverpudlian has shot to UFC stardom since making his promotional debut in September 2021.
He knows that a victory over the No.8-ranked lightweight would put him in prime position for a future UFC title shot against current champion Islam Makhachev.
