Jason Day has vowed to ‘tone down’ his attire at the Masters after his outfit for last year’s event caused commotion.
The Australian golfer caused controversy at Augusta last year due to his bold choice of clothing during the opening round.
He opted for a Malbon sweater vest with the front of it covered in oversized branding that read ‘No. 313 Malbon Golf Championship’. He then topped it off with a pair of baggy black trousers.
But his choices did not go down well with some fans who were quick to pour scorn on the 37-year-old.
Likewise, tournament organisers were far from amused and instructed Day to remove the sweater.
“They asked me to take the vest off, the busy one,” he explained. “Respectfully, you do that because it’s all about the tournament here, and I understand that. I respect the tournament.
“That’s what we’re here to do is try and play and win the green jacket. I don’t know why they asked me to take it off. I didn’t ask. They said, ‘can you take it off?’ I said, ‘yeah, no worries’.”
Day, who finished tied for 30th at last year’s event, sported a loud pair of Khaki Malbon trousers late in the tournament, featuring a large pocket on the side.
But his attempt to add colour and vibrancy to the showpiece will not be repeated this year after Day revealed that Masters chiefs have asked to inspect his clothing choice prior to Thursday’s tee off – an unprecedented move for the Australian.
“If they would have let us do what we first put the scripting through to them, it would have been a lot crazier than last year,” Day added during an appearance on the Dan on Golf show.
“But, you know, it’ll be toned down, just because… they asked to see the scripting before.
“I’ve always been pretty neutral and down the middle, and this year they asked because obviously what happened last year.”
GettyThe Aussie is likely to opt for something a little more conventional this weekend[/caption]Day had previously revealed that Malbon had been planning for him to wear some ‘bold stuff’ at this year’s Masters with some of their proposed designs likely to be disapproved.
The Aussie star has often been partial to the more eccentric look whilst competing.
In February, he donned an all-grey suit in the final stages of the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.
During a practice round on Monday ahead of the Masters, Day hinted that he would be toning it down for the event by sporting a white polo shirt coupled with a pair of olive-coloured trousers.
But focus will be on landing a second Major of his career after his 205 PGA Championship success.
Day has finished in second place in four career Majors and will be aiming to go one better at Augusta.
Jason Day claimed first major title a decade ago and has his sights set on another successConfidence is high after an impressive start to 2025 where he finished tied for third at The American Express, tied for 13th at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, and tied for eighth at the Arnold Palmer Invitational.
