While only the Redondo, Palisades and La Salle boys volleyball teams took home hardware from the tournament hosted by Chatsworth this past weekend, over a dozen local teams gained vital experience that might aid them in the playoffs.
This week is full of league bouts that could end up being league championship deciders.
Chatsworth reaches the final of its tourney
Chatsworth (26-7, 6-0) lost to Redondo, 25-12, 25-16, on Saturday in the Gold Division championship match of the Chatsworth Varsity Invitational. The Chancellors won eight matches overall in the tournament.
Burroughs finished third overall. Burroughs lost to the host Chancellors, 25-22, 25-17, in the semifinals. It went 7-1 overall in the tourney.
Earlier in the week, the Bears (24-6, 6-0) stayed undefeated in the Pacific League with straight-set wins over Pasadena and Arcadia. In the win over Pasadena, Noah Duffield led the Bears with 12 kills, four aces and seven digs while Ryder Tafoya tallied 10 kills and a pair of blocks. Burroughs setter Caiden Shrode racked up 26 assists and four aces in the sweep.
The Bears return to the floor Thursday in a league match at Crescenta Valley, which can force a tie for first with a win.
Saugus finishes big week as Bronze Division runner-up
Saugus earned a straight-set win over Valencia last week in the Foothill League. It was Saugus’ first sweep of Valencia since 2011.
Saugus went on to win five more matches in the Chatsworth Varsity Invitational before losing to La Salle, 25-23, the Bronze Division title match Saturday.
The Centurions (17-13, 4-5) begin the week in fourth place in the Foothill League, and may have found some momentum to take a leap in the standings.
At the top of the league sits West Ranch, which defeated Canyon in straight sets on April 1 behind 24 kills and seven aces from Cal State Northridge commit Noah Douphner. The Wildcats also got a boost from middle blocker Lucas Fico, who added nine kills on just 11 swings.
Canyon (22-7, 6-2) is still on track for a second-place finish and potentially its best regular season since 2015.
West Ranch dropped just its second set in league play this season to Saugus on Thursday but prevailed 3-1. The Cats won the match 25-12, 22-25, 25-20, 25-16 with Douphner again leading the way with 26 kills.
The Wildcats (20-4, 9-0) can secure at least a share of the Foothill League by winning their April 16 match against Valencia.
Van Nuys wins in five again
For Van Nuys, maybe the best things come in fives.
The Wolves won their fifth five-set match of the season Wednesday by edging Sylmar 25-23, 20-25, 25-20, 20-25, 15-11.
The Wolves then earned their fourth straight win by sweeping Panorama on Friday.
Van Nuys continues to chase Kennedy, the only team to beat the Wolves in five, in the Valley Mission standings.
Van Nuys (15-5, 8-1) has two weeks to prepare for round two with Kennedy (13-10, 8-0) on March 21. That match will likely decide the league champion.
Van Nuys is trying to win its first league title since 2019, while Kennedy is looking to reclaim the title after undefeated championships in 2022 and 2023.
This week, the Wolves head to San Fernando on Wednesday while the Cougars take on Sylmar and Panorama.
St. Francis gears up for big week on the road
St. Francis has caught fire at the perfect time. The Knights are winners of eight straight matches and remain perfect in Mission League play after wins last week over Crespi and Alemany.
The Golden Knights will need to keep up the pace with a pair of Mission League heavyweight battles this week.
St. Francis (17-6, 4-0) will head to Notre Dame (9-4, 3-2) on Tuesday. A win would set up a likely league championship match on Thursday, when St Francis takes on MaxPreps’ third-ranked team in the nation, Loyola (23-4, 2-0).
Grant closing in on East Valley title
Grant is riding closing in on its fourth straight East Valley League title.
Grant took down North Hollywood and Verdugo Hills last week and also had a handful of tournament wins to improve to 19-4 overall, 8-0 in league.
The Lancers will have league matches against Chavez and Monroe this week.
