Billy Donovan is 59 years old, which may be hard to comprehend for many, especially for Florida fans who remember the good old days when Donovan patrolled the sideline in Gainesville.
Well, the good old days are back, because Florida is back on the precipice of a national championship, a place Donovan had the Gators a few times. Donovan led Florida basketball to a place many believed it would never get to, and his Gators teams cut down the nets twice as back-to-back national champs in 2006 and 2007.
While UF had success in basketball before Donovan got there, Gators basketball truly arrived under Donovan, who went 467-186 at Florida between 1996-2015. Donovan dominated in the SEC, too, going 200-110 in conference play during those glory years. Donovan has since taken his coaching talents to the NBA, first as head coach of the Oklahoma City Thunder between 2015-20 and then as the head coach of the Chicago Bulls, whom he coaches to this day.
And on this special day for his beloved Gators, Donovan took to social media to wish Florida good luck in Monday night’s national title game against Houston in San Antonio. Donovan’s video was just 7 seconds long, because that’s all he needed to say exactly what was on his mind on the day of the latest biggest game in Florida basketball history.
“Thank you for all your support, Gator Nation … pulling for the Gators tonight, wishing nothing but the best of luck, go Gators!” said Donovan.
