Dallas rabbi who spread Gaza rape claim charged with child abuse

Trigger warning: This article contains descriptions of alleged sexual abuse of a minor.

A Dallas-based rabbi who publicly promoted false claims that Hamas had carried out mass rapes during the 7 October 2023 attack has been arrested on charges of sexually assaulting a child.

Rabbi Yitzhak Mei Sabo, 43, a former tank sergeant in the Israeli military, was taken into custody by Dallas police on 1 April and charged with indecency with a minor.

He is being held on $100,000 bail, according to The Times of Israel, which cited an internal email from the Akiba Yavneh Academy.

Sabo had been employed as director of 'Jewish life' at the Modern Orthodox academy and has served as spiritual leader of the North Dallas synagogue Tiferet Israel since 2022.

According to local media, Sabo is accused of pulling down the pants of a male student and inappropriately touching him over a period spanning several years, beginning when the student was in ninth grade.

The allegations also include claims that Sabo watched the student shower and gave him so-called "massages".

The school placed Sabo on administrative leave on 27 March and barred him from campus or school-related events. An internal investigation is underway.

In a letter to parents, the school described the accusations as "shocking and serious", stating the alleged conduct was incompatible with the school's stated values.

Sabo's synagogue also placed him on unpaid administrative leave following an emergency meeting of its executive board.

Police and school officials have clarified that the allegations do not involve students or staff from the early years or lower school programmes.

Sabo became publicly known in the US media last October after he gave interviews claiming, without evidence, that Hamas fighters had committed mass sexual violence during the 7 October attack.

The discredited allegations were widely amplified in the Western press despite a lack of verified evidence and have since been used to justify Israel’s ongoing war on Gaza, which has killed more than 50,000 Palestinians—most of them women and children.

Sabo's claims were aired by CBS News in a report covering a rally in North Dallas in support of Israel.

He later appeared at an event in November 2023 titled Jews and Christians United with Israel, hosted by Christian Zionist pastor Larry Huch, where he again expressed support for Israel’s military campaign.

A United Nations investigation found in March 2024 that it was unable to verify claims of alleged mass rape by Palestinian fighters on 7 October.
